Post-Op Day 2 (Again)

UPDATE 8.03PM: Dear folks, just to tell you that Dad remains in ICU, heart beating away and very slowly mending again. It's still early days after a major op but he is doing fine according to the doctors.

I know there are wild rumours about but as I said, please check here. We would never hide anything very major from you.

Please do continue praying for him. He needs all that love to keep him going. And we are always telling him that all you folks are willing him on.

Thanks.

ORIGINAL POST:
Dear folks, thank you for all the kind messages. They have really touched me and my family. We will make sure that every single message will be printed out and shown to Dad when he is well enough to read them. I'm sure he will be just as touched to know how much love and support there is for him.

Some of you have asked where to send cards and emails. Of course, putting comments on my blog comes directly to me already. But if you want to send cards or letters, you can send them c/o Institute Jantung Negara, 145 Jalan Tun Razak, 50400 Kuala Lumpur. For those who prefer email, please send them c/o Sufi Yusoff at sufi71@gmail.com.

I know that yesterday and last night, there were many rumours circulating about my father's condition, some of which border on the sensational. Please be assured that my blog will give you the most accurate report on him. All the media are getting their information only from my family and from this blog. So anything that comes from elsewhere at the very least needs to be checked.

I know I said I downplayed his condition last week but I wasn't being untruthful. IJN doctors will give out the medical statements while I will do the human story behind the statements if you like. I know their statements tend to be dry and full of terminology but that's the way doctors are. What I report here will take off from there but I don't embellish. I may downplay sometimes partly so that I won't cause you undue worry but also because things go up and down all the time. Last week he would be great in the morning but not so great in the afternoon, and then great again in the morning. So I tell you about the great parts.

But it would be foolish to pretend that a heart bypass, followed very soon by another operation, are not major things to subject anyone to. So it is a big deal. Having said that, Dad is also a very strong person and the doctors weren't bluffing when they said his recovery progress is better than a lot of people. Right now they are pleased with how he's doing but they are being super-cautious because it is a day-to-day thing. We are optimistic but we also don't want to celebrate too early.

I just looked in on Dad. It's the first time I've seen him since the op. He's still very much sedated because he needs to rest. (BTW this is VERY different from saying he's 'unconscious'. They can bring him out of sedation if they want but not yet.) But he does wake up from time to time and he can hear us and respond to what we say. I told him I was there and he did a typical Dad thing: he winked! I wanted to both laugh and cry.

So, I can't thank you enough for your prayers. Once again they have helped us a lot and definitely him a great deal.

I’m sending this to let you know
I think of you each day,
And pray for your recovery,
Hoping soon you’ll be okay.

You’re going through a lot right now;
You’re treatments can be trying;
Remember while you do them
It’s your problem you’re defying.

Hold on to your positive attitude,
And when things get hard to bear,
Know that Malaysians are here for you;
Remember that we care.

And when you’re well and flourishing,
Look back and realize,
You learned what you were made of;
That’s a reward that satisfies!

We believe in you; You can do it!
We miss you so...
and love you more :)

Get Well Soon, Tun !

DPMM,

I'm anxiously waiting for the "crucial" 72-hour post op period to be over.

How wonderful to hear that bit about the wink!.

Tun will get through this. I know in my heart he will. He has to. Too many people need him!

And all of us are with you at IJN through this blog and through our constant prayers. There is not a single hour that goes by that I dont say a doa for our beloved Tun.

Tonight our family will be holding a small special Sembahyang hajat for Tun's recovery.

May Allah bless you and may Allah give Tun a smooth and speedy recovery.

Please sembah salam to Tun Hasmah, and do take care of her, the pillar of Tun M's strength, and our mother in soul and spirit.

Your blog is the first thing that I read each morning once I reach my office in Wisma Putra every single day since Tun admission into IJN.

Last night was terrible when I received a call from an aide to Chief Minister of Sarawak wanting to confirm news about Tun's condition. My hand was shivering and I can't control my tears that flowing down my cheek. Immediately I sent an SMS to Adzlin to check. WWhile waiting for her reply, my heart was beating fast. Finally, received her reply and I felt sudden rush of relief upon knowing that Tun is recovering.

Please convey our Salam to Tun. We always pray for his good health after Terawih every night.

Get well soon, Tun.

Our very best wishes. May God bless the Tun with a very speedy recovery from all of us at Tempe Arizona!

Way back in 1986 I was one of the fortunate folks who got to shake his hand and and also got a picture taken with your Dad at the shopping mall opposite the National Mosque.

Although I may not agree with all the things that the Tun may have said in the press but he has always remained my personal hero against corruption with justice for all in a multi racial country. I also respect him for his wisdom and courageous stand in the face of greed during the Asian currency crisis.

Please convey to the Tun that we are all eagerly looking forward to his rapid recovery so that he can continue to be an effective thorn in the sides of those who does not want to hear him speak.

Dear Puan Marina

There is a saying "God works in mysterious ways."

I believe the world is reading your blog everyday since the day your dad, The Great Tun, underwent his bypass.

More amazing is the growing "home audience". More and more Malaysians are telling me they are reading your blog.

A few days ago, I had dinner with a group of clients who used to tell me they had no interest in the internet because they are not IT savvy and they can't break the habit of reading hardcopy newspapers and magazines.

They dropped the bombshell on me by saying they are now reading your blog! They say they are concerned about The Great Tun's recovery but cannot find update in the mainstream news so they are "forced" to read your blog.

God has finally connected this group of people to the internet in his own mysterious ways.

I’m certain The Great Tun’s second operation to remove the infection has brought even more Malaysians to the internet.

May God bless and protect The Great Tun always

I am close with one of the Muftis in the country. He once told my husband and I that Tun's involment in helping Bosnia and his outspokeness towards the biased western treatment of the muslim world is very commendable. On many occasions Tun stood up for Islam and the Muslims.....which not many muslim politicians are commited to do.You see, Tun does not portray himself as a pious Muslim or pretended to be one but what he showed us is his true commitments to Islam and fought for it. This to the good Mufti will bring keberkatan to Tun InsyaAllah. Semuga Allah melimpahkan kebaikan keatas Tun dan diperkenankan Nya doa2 kita semua supaya Tun cepat sembuh dan di panjangkan umur.
Salam to you, your mum and the family.InsyaAllah I will get the Mufti to do a sembahyang hajat.

Dearest Tun,

I grew up and old during your tenure but have never got the chance to meet see you in person until that fateful day.

A few years back (2001 I think), I was waiting all alone for the lift in GH after visiting my late granny at her ward. Feeling somewhat down and lost at her conditions when the lift doors finally opened, there you were with Tun Hasmah greeting me with smiles.

I recovered from my initial astonishment and quickly gave way for you both to pass, still reeling from this strange sense of awe inspiring admirations that one would associate with pure greatness.

My deepest regret was not being bold enough then to shake your hand in gratitude for all you have done for us.

Thus my prayers that you shall get well soon Sir, for I am sure there are many like me - hoping to be able to redeem myself.

I hate them DPMM, HATE THEM. They scared me so much I burst into uncontrollable fits of sobbing, upon reading your update and feeling so relieved just a few hours ago.

Thank god for your foresight in having this blow by blow update on TDM's progress. I've said it several times before, and I'll keep saying it. Thank you, thank you, thank god for you.

And of course sembah salam to Tun Hasmah, an angel in human form.

I recieved a shocking SMS from a friend asking me a very bold and distasteful Q about Tun. I was really upset to hear it and quickly sms my bureau chief, Wanjai, who later confirmed to me that your Dad is fine. Such a vile thinking, these people, as if they don't have anything good to do than sending sick rumours!

I hope Tun will get well pretty soon. My payer for him, your mom and your family.

Dear Marina,

My father was in IJN undergoing a his first bypass in DEC 06, and was in the same ward as your father. We shared the same elevator a couple of times. I didn't even say Hi!( all I could manage was a wee smile)..... Not for anything else, but the mutual feeling, I am sure, of wanting to have our own space as we braced ourselves, and mentally strenghtened ourselves.

A "childs" prayer, Marina is so powerful. Have faith and pray for dads wholesome recovery, as we join you and pray with you and your family.

I have always wanted to say this to your dad,if i bumped into him at some private place.
"Would you give me the honour, Tun, to buy you a cuppa"....

So in that spirit! Get well soon Marina's Dad...the kettle is on.

Dear Datin MM,

I have been following this bloG for almost a month now & I have been posting my comments here a couple of times. I'm happy to see more & more Malaysians & even our friends from overseas are dropping by here. Truly you are superb at giving all of us an update of Tun DrM's progress day by day without fail.

The reason i'm posting again is because I've just seen the news on this primetime TV tonight which carried the top of the hour news telling the masses to stop speculating on Tun Dr M's health.... and that's all?! Baik tak payah sebut langsung.

I feel like telling them to shut up! Asyik-asyik nak sensasi aje! why can't they just carry the news that for those who want to find out about Tun Dr M's update & status in REAL TIME just visit Marina Mahathir's bloG at bla.. bla... bla...

Sorry for being a little bit emotional here. Don't get me wrong it's not that I don't want them to carry the news about our Tun, I am just mad at the way they are reporting it. 'Seperti melepaskan batuk ditangga' that would appropriately describe them.

It's the speculation aspect of it that has been highlighted tonight. What they should have done is to interview one of the doctors from the IJN to get an official statement so as to quash all this speculation once and for all! Can't they do that?

Anyway my dear Datin, hang on there. I am sure everyone is rooting for Tun's speedy recovery and hopefully he will be up and about in no time. InsyaAllah!

In the mean time he should have all the rest he needs as well as all the love & support from all of us.

When i was a child of seven I had just returned from England with my parents after years of living abroad. I attended my first malay wedding then. It was your parent's.
I sat in the pengantin's room gazing up at your mum in her heavy sanggul lintang headdress and magnificent bridal outfit. I was amazed! In later years we used to visit your family home in Alor Star, en route from Perlis to Penang or to do our grocery shopping at that Indian shop. My dad was an MP for a little while due to your dad's encouragement, but he wasnt really a political animal so he left that scene.
My mum speaks fondly of those days in Alor Star when they were all young people with dreams still to be fulfilled. I am Izan the daughter of (the late) Abang Tahir and Kak Mahyon. I have lived abroad most of my life and I am back now in KL to live and work. I was proud of Malaysia when your dad was PM, contoversial and feisty, difficult and charismatic.
It is not easy accepting Malaysia as it is now.
Please send our love and prayers to your father and mother. May be get well and strong again. Malaysia needs his spirit, his wit.

Salaam Kak Marina,

Ramadhan Al-Mubarak to you and family and our beloved TDM and TSH.

Been running around for work btwn KL-Ganu-KL-Ganu and now only able to catch up w things.

Thank you for updating us on Tun's second operation.. It was painful to hear he has to go thru it again.. as I said it before, most of us will gladly go thru it for him, if we only could.

Again, can't say it enuff, ICU hygiene is top priority when visiting post surgery patient. I think Tun doctors love him MUCH from what I read..

So here's a big THANKS & HUGS for all the wonderful surgeons, doctors, nurses and staff at IJN for their good deeds. You are our heroes, after Tun and TSH off course :) God Bless!

23rd Sept was my B-Day yesterday and I was back in KL w the family and your news that your dad "winked" is a relief and a B-Day gift for me. You know that Tun is always in our prayers for his good health and semoga Tun berdua dikurniakan Allah kedudukan yg baik di dunia dan akhirat.

I hope Tun had a chance to read my 3 parts message to him before he went back to surgery.. I really hope so. I want Tun to know that there are so many all over the world rooting for him and wanting him to get well SOON. Please give him a BIG HUG from us, when you can and when he is able to!

We've been having ice-cream for dessert for buka puasa since we found out Tun loves ice-cream! hehe :P Tun is a wonderful reason to have ice cream! My mom kirim salam.
I haven't had a chance to go for roti canai yet.. after puasa w wl do..roti canai telur satu!

Dear Datin Paduka Marina,

It has been sometimes for me not commenting in your blog, but tonight I was called to say something. In the year of 1980, there is a guy named Mahathir Mohamad taking over the government from the late Tun Hussein. That time Malaysia still slow in development. But after a while he did some drastic changes, even being critisized by people but he just ignore and do as he want for the sake of his nation, he opened world eyes and put Malaysia on the same level as other country. Now he's lying on the bed, resting and hope he will awake again and smile to all the nations. We really missed him so much and pray for his health and goodwill everytime after the Tarawikh prayers nightly and daily prayers. Get Well Soon My Dear Hero!!!!!

He is the best God gift to Malaysia. I am sure he will pull thru this becoz, Malaysia need him for many many years more.

There is Something Rotten in the state of Denmark he said few months back, he is correct, in fact there is something rotten in the state of Malaysia now. For that we still need him.

Assalaamu'alaikum to you and family. I am so glad that Tun turns out well and strong, after two major operations almost back-to-back. I am sure he will be on his feet very soon, God Willing, the way I have always known him - a strong man refusing to ever give up. Tun is blessed with having so many people caring and praying for him.

I still keep messages offered by visitors to my website after Tun's resignation four years ago, and I still haven't forwarded them to Tun as I didn't know how. They are still at my website - http://peaceinu.webng.com/plus/Galeria/DrM/drm_msg01-eng.htm - can you kindly please forward them to your father? Belatedly, yes, but it's my "hutang" to Tun who deserves those kind words, and the visitors who provided the messages themselves.

I think I was really lucky because I didn't hear any rumours about Tun yesterday, I think I might have gone ballistic. I am so relieved to read about 'the wink'! That's just so typical of Tun. Haha. I guess he knows that you will let us know about it and it will hearten us all who have been keeping vigil here each day.
I have always regretted that I have come into my profession as a reporter too late, just as Tun retired. I would have loved to cover Tun even without being assigned to. I think his PCs and interviews are the highlight of any reporter's day. I hate the bland and uninformative (and sometimes downright ignorant and rude) PCs that I have to cover now.
Anyway back to Tun. I am praying for his recovery everyday and I hope that I can see him again soon. I remember when I covered him the first time when he was giving a talk at one art gallery when the 11th ASEAN Summit in Dec. 2005 was ongoing. I'd actually managed to catch him for a short one on one interview and it was such an honour for me as it was just my first year in this field. I wish we had more time to talk then. Even though, I did manage to tell him a bit of my gratitude to him as our PM for so many years.
I do hope that I will be able to do so again in the future.
Much love to Tun, your mom and the whole family. Thanks dear Marina for being here and spending the time to let us know how Tun is doing.
