Political sites not so hot
A SURVEY has found that political sites command the least interest among Malaysian surfers.
“A Microsoft survey in Malaysia revealed that respondents preferred to surf entrepreneur-type websites and sites which provided positive efforts to improve family relations,” said Energy, Water and Communica-tions Deputy Minister Datuk Sha-ziman Abu Mansor.
“Political websites garnered the least interest from them,” he told Datuk Idris Haron (BN -Tangga Batu).
Shaziman said 11 websites, in-cluding those created by bloggers, had been closed down by the Com-munications and Multimedia Com-mission (SKMM) this year for contravening rules and regulations concerning the publication of information on the Internet. He said two cases had also been brought up to the Attorney-General's Chambers for action.
He added that the Government could take action under the Com-munications and Multimedia Act 1998 against owners, operators or writers of websites who misused the Internet to spread slanderous comments, insult the country's leaders, raise religious sensitivities and issues of race.
“The Government has guaranteed the freedom of the Internet through the MSC Bill of Guarantee and Section 3 (3) of the Act, but that doesn't mean that Internet users are given absolute freedom to misuse such facilities.
“However, there is no need for a new Act to deal with bloggers publishing negative viewpoints, since laws such as the Sedition Act can be used.

Well, well, well...I'd like to see that Microsoft survey and how they define 'least interest'. Maybe we should go directly to Microsoft and ask them. After all they can't be protected by OSA, surely?
Also I'm interested to know which 11 sites have been shut down. I can't really think of any at the moment. And honestly, we get insulted every day by our leaders so why can't we do it back? And tell me Shaziman, are 'negative viewpoints' by default seditious?

LOL! This is why I like you so much. Jangan bagi chance. Cakap merepek je these people.
Honestly, I'm baffled. Why close those blogs? If it's seditious, sue them!
Closing them only shows that there's something to hide....*sic*
Now that TDM is resting nicely at home, DPMM is back at her best...
just don't get the things that our MP's talk about at our sacred house of parliament.. waste of time and energy je

23/10: Petition to The Agong to be submitted on 25/10/2007
Category: General Posted by: Raja Petra
The People's Parliament
Fairuz’s term as CJ ends on 31/10/2007.
He has requested an extension.
4,008 concerned citizens have signed a petition asking for the setting up of a Royal Commission to inquire into and investigate the veracity of what is depicted in the Lingam tape and, if confirmed to be true, to set into motion the necessary steps to remove Fairuz and to clean up the judiciary.
In these circumstances, in my view, Fairuz should properly have taken a leave of absence or have been suspended pending such an inquiry.
Instead, we are confronted with the audacious prospect of an extension of his term!
The Conference of Rulers meets next week.
The matter of the extension or otherwise of Fairuz’s term is almost certain to be on the agenda before their Royal Highnesses.
It is, in my view, important that the concerns of those who have bravely signed the petition be made known to the Conference of Rulers.
For that reason, I shall be making arrangements to have the petition and the list of signatories delivered to the palace on Thursday, 25th October, 2007.
If you have not signed the petition and would like to do so, you have until 12 noon tomorrow.
Have you read the petition to His Majesty the Yang diPertuan Agong to ask for the establishment of a Royal Commission to look into and stop the rot in the judiciary and to return the judiciary to the rakyat?
To read the draft petition in English, please click HERE.
The actual petition, complete with the language of protocol, can be viewed HERE.
To sign up in support of this petition, please send your name and i.c. number to :

Sigh, it's nice to know that not only commoners feels insulted now. Honestly Marina, i feel discouraged being a Malaysian every single day. And some people keep saying that we lack patriotism when we voice our say. Thus using all sorts of law to shut us up! The harder they try, the more angry the people will be and if the so called leaders don't listen for good, we might as well be some backwards 3rd world country who's been to space!

DPMM,
I really appreciate your help. Thanks
To fans of Tun Mahathir.
Please THINK.
I honestly hope that people who are unhappy at the laws and policies of the Government today, are not ONLY pointing the finger to the current PM and his ever-so-eager son-in-law.. but that's what I see in many political blogs owned by people or groups who seem to be die-hard fans of Tun Mahathir..
The fact is, the whole thing about "the PM being too powerful and his cronies being corrupt, etc" (which Tun Mahathir is worried about) is the result of decades of political hijacking and bullying (excessive constitutional amendments, draconian laws, detentions without trial, control of and lies by the mainstream media, etc).
You complain about a PM who sleeps a lot. Well, if the system was correct, a sleeping PM wouldn't have been there in the first place, or he would have been quickly replaced even if he were put there.
Yes. Complain. We have the rights to. It's our land.. BUT look at the SYSTEM, and let's figure out what to do with the SYSTEM. Don't just see this as a problem caused by one or two individuals, because whether you like it or not, your very own idol might have played a very big part in causing the whole mess.
U may defend Tun Mahathir all you like, but he has been a part of the mess. So have you. So have I.
Microsoft survey, eh? Almost sounds like those chain e-mail of yore, where Microsoft supposedly tracks 'em and pays for each time it gets forwarded to some charity or other... which is all BS anyway, and nothing more than spam it turns out.
But really shocking - the survey aside - the the last paragraph!
Negative comments = liable to be OSA'd???? Good grief!
And I thought Stalinism went out of style with the Berlin Wall...
what BS. wonder what microsoft has to say about this?
this is the telus govt we have..BS all the time...piiilah!!!
MM: And honestly, we get insulted every day by our leaders so why can't we do it back?
Vintage Marina! :D
If we look up "Malaysian Ostrich" in an ornithological(sp?) reference for rare birds, most likely we'd see this Shaziman turkey. Hehehehe!
Hi Marina, Section 3(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 defines those acts defined as having a seditious tedency as acts with a tedency, among others, to bring into hatred or contempt or to excite disaffection against any Ruler or against any Government. So, techinically speaking, yeah, negative comments against the government are by default seditious. Remember, you only have to act with a TEDENCY to excite DISAFFECTION against the govt, which includes the slightest criticism of the govt which will certainly cause at least some readers to feel a little bit of negative feelings towards the govt. That's why this law is totally open for abuse and has been abused on many occasions.
datin paduka,
he's just trying to get his name in the news again! that's what i think...trick lama!
tampin people, vote wisely!
shaziman is a pity to Malaysia and Malaysian. A young leader with narrow minded thinking.
I am still waiting for Syed Hamid Albar and Zainudin Maidin survey re Johorian support for the government scrapping of the crooked bridge....till now no news of that either.
drmuzi
It's funny how some get in the mode of thinking that rules govern people as rules were used to govern children in schools. I fail to understand, why do they buy into the concept of "lead by creating fear!"...it's so true when they say that the true test of a leader's character is when you give him power...
i'm also interested to know the 11 sites that were shutdown.. ;)
i decided to wait for the hansard to be published before i comment. this is what i found (among what the DM said):
Untuk pengetahuan
Dewan, sebenarnya di negara kita walaupun kita lihat mungkin bloggers ini merupakan satu
kaedah terbaru bertukar dan berkongsi maklumat sebenarnya banyak laman-laman web ini
mempunyai peranan positif, memberi banyak kebaikan kepada orang ramai.
i do think that he was trying to tell the MPs that there are more good things that come from the internet/blogging than bad. and he never said that blogs were part of the 11 websites that were shut down.
Hahaha...that's what they do best...sweep everything under the rug....but it's good news for us as then...we'll be left alone. the government suck big time....I miss Tun's leadership.
This from the same jokers who took an hour to find RPK's site when the wnated to lodge a report and the same jokers who dunno what a blog is, sigh do much for from Tin Mines to K Mind
What the government leaders say
Many will get burning ears listening
About bloggers brewing nonsense
Yet they want to cow them to their knees
So the BN leaders say
Bloggers aren’t threat to their sensitivities
Along the way they make statements
So silly I don’t know what is brewing in their heads
If we aren’t the ones making waves
Why label us ‘goblok’ in the first place?
There must be something the government is afraid
The world of internet
The leaders can’t shut down the bloggers so easily
I always believe
One has a right to express in one’s own blog
The rantings flow from one’s mind
Tell me how many can reach the government leaders ears?
If not through the bloggers
Many people will be fooled so many times already
What the government leaders say
It is to their own interests they needed it
Sitting on the pot of gold
They forget the people put them there
"...that doesn't mean that Internet users are given absolute freedom to misuse such facilities."
--> Does the facilities belong to you? Do you own the internet?
Just think critically!!!! Listening to this shit is just a waste of time..
Nice try, SAM.
The 11 websites referred to the MCMC were probably the 'get rich quick scams' which were 'blocked' rather than 'closed down'. And there is one or two cases of either money laundering or unlicensed money lending which are pending court trials.
For SAM to stretch it onto bloggers is obfuscation at best, especially by quoting an obscure Microsoft survey to support his contention.
Shall we ask SAM about ministers who abuse their portfolios through dereliction of duties? Or are they beyond reproach?
Shaziman-“A Microsoft survey in Malaysia revealed that respondents preferred to surf entrepreneur-type websites and sites which provided positive efforts to improve family relations,”
Everyone knows that the biggest usage of all time (even until today) is PORN.
I think, he's referring to PORN.
No doubt he's right.
first of all. welcome back.
its been a while since you last blogs about other things.
I have to agree with you, they do really try to make their point , now dont they? to discredit bloggers is not new , and to be honest it is not that shocking either.
But I do have to say that instead of being convincing, it just sounds lame and sad. lame because "report by Microsoft" ?- please at least do some independent research lah - maybe the special internet task team could come out with something concrete .Shissh.
Sad because this is coming yet from the mouth of our fellow people elected YB. For somebody to be elected and trusted by tangga batu people, you aint doing enough homework bro!
I am actually praying for one beautiful day that our elected YB could discuss with some amount of intelligence and substance so that we the people could be proud that our choosen leader are doing all they can to make our life a little bit better.
Political blogs are of little interest if you take an international scale of things, but I was under the impression from a separate survey(can't remember by whom) that political blogs are surprisingly well read in Malaysia . . . and it sounds like a blatant threat . . . saying that blogs have been closed down and that the sedition act will be used . . . it's literally saying "you'd better sucker up and pucker my rear or else . . . " . . .
hmmm..perhaps if the age group in friendster is any indication of the demographics of netizens in malaysia, malaysian surfers are mostly in their tweens?
also, i never realised that they were so stringent on blogs. still, blogs are our only channel for free voice right now. i believe blogs, despite crackdown, will be the agent of change in Malaysia.
great job on your blog! =) i admire you from my college in singapore ;)
'we get insulted every day by our leaders so why can't we do it back?'
INDEED!
I guess this is called 'government'.
