Sabah women slam Umno Speaker's 'tunnel vision'

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Women's Advisory Council (MPWS) took Umno Assembly Speaker Badruddin Amiruddin to task over his uncalled-for remarks about AirAsia stewardesses' uniforms at the party's General Assembly in Kuala Lumpur.
Chairperson Datin Asnimar Hj Sukardi said Saturday, it was most unbecoming of Badruddin to make fun of women in such a disrespectful manner.
"Apparently, some men have not learned a lesson from experiences in the past when MPs degraded women in Parliament. This time around, it happened during a political gathering of a dominant ruling party.
"We would have expected a man of his stature to give some sound advice on the dressing, instead of resorting to belittling women.
"We (MPWS) think he had gone too far in criticising women and should have been tactful," she said when contacted. The Umno Assembly Speaker drew laughter when he used a crude euphemism to refer to female genitalia. "For some of them you can even see their tunnel," he was quoted as saying in Malay.
Asnimar urged menfolk to be more sensitive and not to continue hurting the feelings of women in the country.
Sabah Law Association's Women and Children Rights sub-committee head Nilakrisna James said: 'I am appalled, disgusted and speechless. It becomes increasingly obvious that we need to send to Parliament only level-headed people instead of ones who love to discriminate.
"In other countries, the people would have demanded immediate resignation of the person who made such a statement. It must be disgraceful and embarrassing to Umno."
Zainaba Shukor, President of West Coast Single Mother Association also regretted Badruddin's comments.
"I don't think this is the right place for them to bring up the matter. There are also more important matters like the cost of living instead of making a big fuss about the skirt," she said.
The Umno Assembly heard that the AirAsia stewardesses skirts were too short and exposed the genitals.
"AirAsia stewardesses expose their calves, thighs and knees and this is inappropriate," delegate Zaleha Hussin, said. "Malaysia is an Islamic nation and Islam Hadhari is the basis for our lifestyle and this is inconsistent with it," she said, referring to the government's policy of promoting a version of the religion that emphasises economic and scientific development.
AirAsia stewardesses wear a red jacket, white blouse and above-the-knee red skirt.

Should we all be surprised that once again men have made degrading remarks on us women? The answer is a resounding NO. We should never be surprised that men here make all sorts of degrading, bias, sexual remarks on women because we women feed into these dimwit men's mentality.
Number 1, for the life of me, I cannot understand why we women must react to such degrading statement. I am very sure that such airhead remarks by men are made purely to irritate women and to seek reaction. Yah, you can say that men are attention seeking airheads!If so, than why fall into that very trap? If men can and want to continue to be airheads giving dumwit remarks, let them be and we women, should be more clever not to feed into such nonsensical behaviour. No reaction from us women will eventually stop such crap! Afterall, it wouldn't be fun to blare nonsense if there is no response right? And I am also very sure, after awhile, some quarters of the airheads (men la) will start to tell their counterpart to shut up as it is no fun anymore.
Number 2, Whatever I am about to say may sound racist and I am sorry if I offend anyone but I really gotta say this....as a non-muslim, I do feel that this "we are an Islamic nation" propoganda is going too far. Everyone got to realise that making such statements can have very detrimental effects. For one, not everyone is a muslim or islam in this country and although, yes, islam is the official religion, no one should be forced directly or indirectly to accept islam's way of life and that includes how we are to dress or not dress for the matter. OK.. the not dress part is a bit too much, I admit! (How can not dress! Sigh..) Anyway, my story is this, if wearing skirt which of course expose the calves, knees and maybe a little bit of thighs (I doubt it will expose the whole thighs or most of it..as it will be very uncomfortable to move about and keep whatever is suppose to be private, PRIVATE) is not acceptable to Islam, than please leave it within that community!! Why bring it up in public on a very public matter such as an airline uniform? If muslim women who feels that it voilates their principal, than for the love of GOD, don't go and kepoh be that airline stewardess! Tony Fernandez or for the matter, air asia's board of directors have that little right to decide if they want their girls to wear skirt or pants rite!? Why make it a religion issue!?
For another, by saying that "we are a islamic nation" and therefore such attire is inappropriate means what? Other race or religions don't have modesty or that running near naked is acceptable to the other races/religions? Sigh.. What nonsense! Why is it that everything spewed out of any politician's mouth must have that religion concoction? Can't we touch on simple subject like clothes and food without getting that religion thingy involved?
So, to sum up... if we women want men to shut up with such nonsensical, airhead, dimwit remarks about women, we women must first learn how not to feed into these nonsensical, airheaded, dimwitted men's fantasies! By reacting and giving all sorts of verbal blast is not going to teach these men how to respect women. And women who keep making idiotic remarks should learn to shut up!
In terms of what might be inappropriate I have for a while thought the MAS uniform to be it, not Air Asia. After all it is the MAS stewardess' uniform that is often body hugging, especially on the slightly bigger built onwards, and often even exagerates/magnifies the curves. I have witnessed drunken Ukrainian sailors misbehaving and disgustingly showing how their dressing was turning them on.
In any case if he does not know, it is not a woman's dressing that gets our poor MP into a twitch. It is reflective of his poor upbringing, his animalistic instincts ruling his head rather than that of a civilised human being. He is sick!

The problem started when they did not get free tickets for trips last minutes from Airasia...Assuming ticket is RM9.99 and airlines should pay the taxes and fuel charges for 10-15 members traveling to places for their business...many people never talk about it, but i heard from someone...seem like a revenge??

Whatever it is, it has been hypocritical anyway. MAS air stewardess are no better. The whole body figure is outlined. You see the size of her boobs. You see the size of her ass. You see the colour of her hair. What Malaysia is doing is attracting male passengers to board our best cabin crew airline. Admit it, baju kebaya is sexy. So here we are talking about covering our aurat. Yet what are we doing in reality. What is Jabatan Islam doing ? Why can't these female air stewardess have uniforms like those going for Haj ? We say we are protecting our own female species. Exactly how do we protect each other ? Just which one is the more acceptable practise ? Wear as you wish ? AirAsia's service has been much wonderful compared to Malaysian Airlines. People travelling freqently like me may not notice the dress but would certainly notice the service.
When I was travelling alone with my baby who was sleeping in the stroller, I had to carry my baby and fold the stroller myself with one hand and the stewardess by the door was getting impatient and scorned at me to close the stroller faster.
Then some Indian ground staff who passed by asked the stewardess if she can't help me with the stroller and then he closed it quick and left. After that I never booked my ticket with Malaysian Airlines unless and otherwise I prefer that particular timing to fly for my work. We pay for flying and if we are not respected we don't need to choose them. Further to that the cabin pressure in Malaysian airlines have been very poor, I'm not a technical person but I have flied many times and it is only in Malaysian airlines I feel my ears are blocked more. Government officials unnecessarly attacking other airlines seems very silly especially commenting on the dress.
