what do you think Marina? What is your personal opinion on it?

I am sad that it happened. I saw with my own eyes today. The trip to KL which was supposed to take about 20 minutes from Subang Jaya, took 3 and half hours.

HE said today "Ask for clean election, ask for reformarsi".

Now, the news of us having a 'riot' is all over the world. What is going to happen to our country then?

I am just a student and I don't know a lot about politics. But it worries me as I love this country so much.

what's new said...

So they have a lot of fun playing with the police...time to get the rabble rousers or let them shout..cheap thrill...

so what's new...?

But you were not there..why? too hot huh to go out...too comfortable with your husband and kids...come on now...to be a revolutionaire you have to be willing to go to kamunting..

blogging and repeating mat salleh news hardly raise an effort...

1. Zam Refutes Al Jazeera's Claim Police Used Force On Protesters

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin has refuted satellite television station Al Jazeera's claim that police had used force on hundreds of protesters here today.

He told the station that police had tried to disperse the protesters by using water cannons as the gathering was illegal. "When they refused to disperse, the police allowed them to march to Istana Negara to hand over a memorandum demanding for a clean and fair election.

"The police managed to handle the situation as best they could," he said over the phone in a live interview by Al Jazeera here.

He was responding to the illegal assembly organised by the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections or "Bersih" comprising 26 non-governmental organisations and which also involved opposition parties, to hand over the memorandum containing their demands, to Istana Negara.

Asked why Malaysia did not allow such gatherings, Zainuddin said they were unnecessary because general elections had been held without fail in this country and according to the scheduled dates.

The minister also hit out at Al Jazeera for having the wrong perception when posing questions...

2. Tear gas fired at Malaysia rally
UPDATED ON:
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2007
10:17 MECCA TIME, 7:17 GMT

Malaysian police have fired tear gas shells and water cannons to disperse hundreds of activists at an opposition-backed rally in the capital Kuala Lumpur.

The rally on Saturday was organised by activists demanding changes to the electoral system ahead of general elections expected early next year.

Thousands of demonstrators in the city centre were stopped by a police cordon as they tried to march to the Merdeka [Independence] Square, the planned location of the rally.

Many activists barricaded themselves in a nearby mosque for protection...

Nota:

Adakah nilai-nilai demokrasi Malaysia tercabar?
Kenapa Abdullah Ahmad Badawi perlu beria-ia mengatakan ia pantang dicabar?
Siapa yang untung dari peristiwa ini?
Adakah ianya berprinsipkan: when your adversary makes you look bad you look very good?

Watching the video gives me a sense of satisfaction. Here's to you, Khairy. Go fuck yourself instead of trying to be famous for a person at your age. Go get a real life. Your recent debate on oil price subsidy is worst of all. Even Robin Hood did a noble act by robbing from the rich and giving it to the poor. In your case, you're just trying to rob from both the rich and the poor and put monies into your pocket. Go to hell, Khairy. If you let me see you without your so-called "protection" and if your father-in-law steps down, you better flee the country because many people including myself will chop into multiple pieces and feed it to the dogs. So, are you game enough to fight with real men one-on-one instead of hiding in your cocoon and fuck Maya Karin until she moans with pleasure? You used public funds to instruct the police to whip the public. How interesting. Why don't you use your father-in-law's money to whip yourself and others in your microscopic "empire". Don't think you can escape from the people later on. Let's see how you can continue "buying" Hisham and Ka Ting and Najib and Samy and the rest. They're timid to be "bought" but not with me and my group. The plan to bring you down is already laid underway and once we swing into action, not even Osama is man enough to stand up for you. Khairy, read my lips. GO TO HELL. I'm good and lenient enough to buy you a one-ay ticket to hell and I'm sure many out there would want to have the priviledge to do likewise. Go cry your lungs out for more "protection" because not even God Almighty Himself can go against my wrath and fury when my group and I swing into action and send you to hell once and for all. Let's see how you kiss the Kris when you're suffering in hell. Marina, go tell your dad that there's going to be fireworks even more spectacular than Year 2000 celebrations. Mukhriz, Mirzan and Mokhzani, stand firm and do the right thing because your dad built a strong legacy and demands you people being hid beloved children of his to continue them without fear and for the goodness of all. Marina, ever since your dad retired, I'd be glad if Malaysia became stagnant but instead, Malaysia went downhill. Many people are suffering and only cohorts of Khairy make good money. This must turn around. This mustn't continue anymore. Let Khairy the traitor suffer at the hands of his own doing.

I can't believe this is happening back home. It's rather worrying to see this when you're on the other end of the world, where protests are usually enormous but waayyyy less violent.

This is an oneupmanship game.

Score 1 - 0 in favour of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He has managed to enliven his famous or infamous (depending on which side of the fence you are on) street politics or 'politik jalanan'.

Anwar Ibrahim has managed to convince (hoodwink to some) the opposition parties to follow his style of politics. Even the lawyers, who are supposed to be level headed somehow lost their cool and jumped the gun in 'lingamgate'. Before the whole story is told, these lawyers were convinced that the part clippings are the whole truth. Come to think of it, I pity their clients if this thinking summarizes Malaysian lawyers as a whole.

Congratulations Anwar Ibrahim. But today, my family and I are sad for Malaysia, very sad indeed.

hello marina...
im aine, engineering student from Multimedia University Melaka Campus. i was very sad to see that this clip is somehow trying to pull Malaysia down. though i admitt that i dont really involved in this political things, but why can't these people think about making a better place for malaysia? why does all these kind of REFORMASI or illegal meeting is involved by malay people? at least if there is something up that they didnt really like, make it in a very rasional way. if they still continue making these meetings and stuff, they will let Malaysia as one of the corrupted country in the eyes of the world. no people will get involved in businees & etc when it comes to malaysia. why cant they think? i am ashamed to see my people didnt think HARD. somehow i still being proud of my own people because we do still have the ability to THINK not to get involved with this kind of illegal meeting. tq.

Datin Paduka,
Please do not answer those comments above which come from opportunists who had economically benefitted from the country's prosperity under Tun M.
U guys, when the people took to the streets shouting "reformasi" years ago, Tun M's administration did not order 4000 of the police force to cordone off the heart of KL or put up road blocks preventing people to come into the city like what they did yesterday. We didnt hear reports of police 100% checking cars and confisticating shirts that shout "reformasi".Did Tun M ever said he doesnt like to be challenged when the reformists took to the streets? And by the way none of Tun M's children made comments or ordered the PDRM to arrest the "monkeys".
Some of the rakyat could have something to pick wth Tun M then, but there were still tolerence bcos the economy was still good, rakyat could make a decent living, the cake was big enough for everyone to share. We were proud to be given international recognition, but how is it now? Not only the cake is getting smaller but almost being eaten up by one family...the Badawi's! Malaysia then was well on the way to becoming a developed nation...bcos of the vision of one man..Tun M. But now Malaysia is on the way to become like one of the poor African countries...the world knows its there but nobody cares. Thanks to moronic minds of those on the fourth floor. The rakyat has had enough of the current administration inefficencies. The rakyat have spoken loud enough but the PM continue to slumber listening to bedtime stories (read to him by those surrounding him)that the rakyat is "living happily ever after"!
Give my regards to both Tun M Tun H.

We have born witness to several "questionable" judgements recently by the authorities i.e. judicial review farce by the incompetent minster nazri aziz, letting off of the klang municipal officer (forgot him name), and now utter suppression of information and demonstrations. I for one do not favor 'illegal' demonstrations as what we have seen by other nations - we are Malaysians la dammit. If u need to voice yr disatisfaction - go see the PM directly. Use yr voting rights.

I am pissed becoz I was stuck with my family for 2 hours in a stupid uncessary jam. By the time we cleared the barricade, my kids we tired and we headed home.

So to all the participants of the demos - u wasted yr time and my time. Thanks!

To the police - please - where is the culprit who killed Nurin? Where is the culprit who killed that poor Sikh child? Too many questions and few answers. As usual. When do we change?

Dr M - Malaysia for many years have been peaceful under your care - several hard actions were questionable - but at the end, we remain unscated. U have proven everyone wrong and I send my personal thanks and salute.

As for your sucessor - well, he needs to be firm. He is a good and decent man - but at times like this - we need a firm hand. And do away with unnessary politicians like Nazri Aziz.

To anonymous who felt you "wasted" a few hours of your time trapped in a traffic jam caused by a "useless" demo..

If you can be that Shallow - please migrate to another country and do NOT be a Rakyat of Malaysia!!

How the heck can you whinge like this??

Let me get this straight..you can not even forego a few hours of YOUR life stuck in a jam for the hope of a BETTER future for YOUR kids??

What & HOW will you answer your kids when THEIR future is F**ked by even worst corruption and robbing of their future by our inept government???

Do you think the people demonstrating have NO family, no future, & so much time on their hands that they will walk in the rain - knowing they face the real danger of an aggressive police??

And please tell me WHY should those "stupid" demostrators RISK their LIVES for people like you???

Oh...don't tell me - you are the typical a**holes who when asked to stand up wouldn't even dare or bother

but - PLEASE include you when everything's A-OK and you reap the benefits - for which you did NOT lift a finger!

I absolutely agree that MANY are not bloody supporters of anwar..or lim kit siang etc.

We were there as supporters to defend OUR way of life; fair elections; an unbiaised judiciary who do NOT answer to the govt but to the people!!

And you can tell who were perceived as the real Threat to UMNO..PAS !!!

They opened up their chemical water cannons at demonstrators in Masjid Jamek and not Pasar Seni..where the majority were PAS supporters.

There were many other races in the other gathering points but they let them be...WHY??

No - I am not a PAS member - far far from it.

No - I am not a Mahathir sympathiser

No - I am not an Anwar/Lim Kit Siang supporter

I AM MALAYSIAN & I WANT PEACE but most of ALL I want Malaysia FOR Malaysians who really truly and deeply LOVE MALAYSIA!!

hi,
just wanted to express my frustration and disappoinment
in the national coverage of the event on top of everything else that has happened and i also echo the sentiments of the other comments over our beloved malaysia. i feel the message delivered to the king acts as a futile symbolic token as it is not being perpetrated/amplified by the bodies responsible for channelling the news to the public. they are being cowards and have no balls to stand up for the truth.i had to hear it from al-jazeera. puts our beloved country in true degenerative form.

at least i remember a silly pledge to honor my chosen profession when we were passionate and rebellious students at uni. every student must've felt that spark once.

every editor, reporter, journalist in nst, the star, utusan, malay mail and bla bla should be ashamed. no freedom of expression, this latest episode of blatant coverage just confirms all our suspicions of the government's marionetting hands on the pentas media. im just afraid that the malaysia i grew up in before in the 80s and 90s can't sustain itself for much longer.

suddenly the grass is greener on the other side. and i havent felt this way in a long time.

Gracious Lord The Almighty,

What is the implication of this rally to our country's image and reputation now? What would the neighbouring countries and even worse, countries who have always wanted to see Malaysia go down the drains due to political instability and insecurity think of? Is this 'reformasi' the only way to solve all the above problems/concerns? Do we Malaysians have to tell and shout so that the WORLD could here us when we want something to be improved in our own country? What are we Malaysians especially those involved trying to do actually? Are we hoping for some 'foreign' intervention after this or maybe call for international pressures on Malaysia should there be no positive outcome achieved from Nov 10 incident?

I am sad and at the same time ashamed that we need to resort to this to get what we wanted...at the expense of our beloved Malaysia's good image/reputation. Maybe some of us who called ourselves Malaysians are simply ungrateful and easily lured to things similar, when citizens of other nations are flooding our country to reap the benefits of our modestly-still-good economy which are anchored by our political stability and internal security.

As a Malaysian living abroad, I am worried indeed!

Dear Datin Marina,

I've met you personally as one of the youngsters at your workshop in Futurekids quite a long time ago regarding your talk on HIV/AIDS.

I'm currently in overseas seeing Malaysia from a far away land. Until my friend sms me and ask me to check on the news, I didn't know Malaysia was in such a mess. Personally I am not politically involve and definitely would not think bias over whoever. In general, there have been so many arguments and different people arguing over different things from different races to different political parties. I see it as there is many ways to solve a problem and having BERSIH project and all sometimes isn't the best way to show what everyone really want to send the message. COMPROMISE - that's the one word I don't see it happening!!!

On the media side, trying to hide the situation isn't going to help the situation either. Now, in the eyes of the world, we are not that tall after all, giving the others the idea - Malaysia having riot! What a SHOCK huh?

When I heard that, I felt the pain. It's painful to see such news and all I'm hoping that the king will do is to fairly make them COMPROMISE and do the right thing.

To those who have the right to vote (I can't cause I'm not in Malaysia), but VOTE for the one that would help the us for our future. FAIR and CLEAN election is needed, we get the message. Can we move on peacefully after this? Without any rally or water cannon or what so ever. Before any decision is made (like the rally) think rationally. Before concluding everything is illegal (like the rally), can give them the democracy to speak fairly.

CONCLUSION: the tightly you pull, the rebel is stronger!

2) Adik kata jangan demo. Adik kata tentukan Kerajaan melalui undi saja.

3) Adik suruh kita "THINK HARD". Carilah punca sebenar rakyat berdemonstrasi.

Sejak zaman Tun Mahathir jadi PM pun begitu. Sekarang ni, Tun Mahathir duk complain2 pun, Kerajaan tak nak dengar cakap dia. So nak buat lagu mana lagi???

Gobloking,
Good on you! Thank you for saying it out loud to the person who said it "wasted" his/her time. It shows how selfish and couldn't-care-less attitude of the people. When it comes to upholding the justice and fairness, it is a waste of time until the problem hit them right in the face. The brave people who marched in the rain, are people who care. They are from all walk of like, Malays, Chinese, Indians, the people who cannot see with their eyes, people who cannot walk with their feet, young and old. They concern about the future of this country. Some said that we have election every 4-5 years, and that is fair. I tell you, even if we have election every year, and the system remains corrupted, unfair, it makes the mockery of democracy and our right as citizens of this country. If you think it is a waste of time to speak out, please get out of this country. You can come back as tourists once in awhile to attend the musical concert, shopping, but you are not fit to be a citizen of this country. To these people I say, "Katak di bawah tempurung."

I supported the memorandum that was submitted to the Istana.

However, I felt cheated when 'top-gun' politician was the one submitting it. I was expecting a non-political person to submit the memo to show it was the words of the Rakyat.

Some political gain by oposition leaders and bad management by BN Govt. Current leaders should go to lateral thinking course on how to manage the situations.

Its sad to see such naive comments from people who were not there but take the opportunity to dismiss the gathering....you have the right, that I do not deny you...but so did 40-50K of people who did march.

There is no doubt in my mind that the very people commenting against the march are the same people who whinge and whack the govt, whether verbally in small groups or online, yet when it comes to walking the talk, lack the fortitude for it.

Please, if you don't understand why the march happened, please do not assume you know more than the people who were there.

As for the image of this country - I ask these questions...What good would it be if, in the next 20 years, corruption and lawlessness is the order of the day?? What would be the image then? And can you undo something that has become so potent and rife??

Posted in Rocky's blog:
When I read about Bersih's yellow campaign, the first thing that struck my mind was; if I was the PM, I'd send my BN teams there to rally. PM said in recent GA that he looks forward Election day, where the Rakyat can choose and vote them, again. If he had sent BN members there, it would show to the Rakyat and the entire world;

that they are NOT AFRAID OF THE ELECTION

if the Rakyat wants BN, they will get BN, no matter what through clean elections

that this is truly a democratic country, with its Rakyat exercising their constitutional right to assemble peacefully

that they have nothing to hide because they believed in clean elections (even if they hadnt)

and most importantly, it will restore public's opinions on election issues, restoring confidence in our voting system, and giving BN the desperately needed boost of their already poor image

Unfortunately, NO, it went otherwise, and this made the Rakyat believed that there was something WRONG with the voting system, confirming all the reasons why the Oppositions and NGO has been rallying all these while. So, it was not a very smart move from them.

As a Malaysian, regarless of my race or my religion, I have a right to:

Freedom of thoughts

Freedom of speech or blog (well, that too is under threat by the dumb Noraini using ISA)

Freedom of peaceful gathering ??

and most importantly, my right to VOTE (and it MUST be via a CLEAN election system), but with the protest claiming it was an illegal gathering, tear gas & water gun sprayed and people beaten up, it only proves that my Government ALLOWS me to vote, allows an election but wont promise it will be clean.

So, what's left of my rights? At the end of the day, it only allows me to THINK (the only thing they could not control) and VOTE (it would not make any difference as it will be manipulated).

Crime is high and prices of many things are high, and will continue to be high.

As for those who went and supported last Saturday, I have only admiration and I salute them. It doesnt matter if the Oppositions were there, we are asking, calling, requesting & begging for FAIR ELECTION, so how can this be wrong? They were acting on behalf of millions of people who cannot be there, so how can this be wrong? AND, 40,000 people there gathering peacefully standing up against the Police and abuse, all for the fight on behalf of millions of people, for their rights, for yours and mine.

I never voted before, but I will now for the next election.

A lot of comments seem to focus more on what the outside world thinks of malaysia than their concern for what malaysians think of malaysia. I am not a malaysian but my wife and my two beautiful children are. Obviously if people think that the elecions are fair and honest then would be no need for such a rally.

Just as an example, I checked my deceased father in laws voter registration last night and he is still registered even though being deceased for 6 years! Is this system proper?

The citizens of malaysia have every right to peacefully assemble to ask for clean and fair elections. For those of you concerned about what others think I'd be more concerned about what your fellow malaysians think. It's obvious a great number of them think the system is corrupt.

Cheers...

hi, Aunty & readers.

whether we agree or disagree with each other, it’s still really nice to see that Malaysians are talking [even if only through blogs]. this is a huge departure from the Reformasi days of the late 1990s where open views like these were almost only accessible in the monthly or bimonthly opposition-affiliated publications and others like Aliran, etc. access to the various views that exist in our society today, i think, is thanx to the fast growing blogging community; many of whom allow readers to comment freely. it’s quite interesting to observe that this community even includes ex-newspapermen/women saying stuff they’d otherwise edit, if not throw out, during their days in service. press blackout in Malaysia is not a recent phenomenon, let’s get real about that.

some comments here express concern about what they saw on foreign news; that Malaysia looked like Pakistan or Myanmar. sometimes i feel this is precisely why regular Joes should attend rallies; so they can see for themselves what happens on the ground. ya, the water cannon and teargas incident did happen. but in a mass of tens of thousands that sprawled across the city, it was a relatively isolated incident. so much so that many of the Yellow marchers didn’t even know about it until friends texted them or when they went home and saw reports about it on the news. for those who saw the news and feel ashamed that the incident happened, well … don’t let one video clip focusing on one LRT station/mosque sum the whole event. and don’t assume that the police don’t instigate trouble.

as for those who were complaining about getting stuck in traffic … well, it is a privilege to be part of the contented middle-class, isn’t it? the kind who wouldn’t mind getting stuck in traffic during sale season and going around in circles like idiots looking for parking in a shopping mall, but mind getting stuck in traffic the one day their fellow Malaysians decide to take a peaceful stroll calling for a change that they too would benefit from. they’re likely the kind who’d want to send their children overseas to study because of the academic freedom practiced in those countries, as well as the relatively greater civil liberties. they wish such an environment would exist here at home, but not if it’d cause a traffic jam! i love this bourgeois crowd the most. they’re a constant reminder of the kind of person, daughter and mother i’d never want to be.

as for certain politicians taking lead of the march, well let us get familiar with BERSIH and know that the coalition was initiated by political parties that joined forces with some NGOs. they sponsored the event, so they la yang hand in memorandum. an organiser of any event would have done the same. and let’s acknowledge the fact that a rally of that size and the presence of the Unit Amal Malaysia, who did a fantastic job in keeping peace and order at the event, could not have materialised out of thin air. an organised and experienced group of people put the whole thing together. and who more experienced in disseminating information and mobilising people than political parties [government and opposition]? while politicians will always try to hijack glory [as did some individuals in the recent rally], i credit the political parties involved for not exploiting the event for their party’s benefit. they did not allow participants to carry party or organisation flags. that, i think, was a big PR sacrifice on their side [tho i also think many wouldn’t have attended the rally if it was a blatant political do].

elections is coming soon and i hope eligible voters who have not registered will register soon. you can do it at your nearest post office. it doesn’t matter who you vote. what matters is that you vote. and do check your status against the EC’s database. my mother who has never voted in Petaling Jaya had to vote there last election. maybe the EC thought she’d be useful there, they changed her address to a new one we’ve all never heard of. my deceased relatives too are still on the roll despite my making a police report last election. if this requires us going to court, we will.

Tak perlulah nak berbuat sebegini, memanggil wartawan luar negara utk membuat liputan.

Khairy is an idiot, PM Badawi is not doing much for Malaysia. This coming election we will see who will suffer for the arrogance.

OUT WITH BN!

I'm so grateful that I'm out of Malaysia now. Now I know how badawi must have felt like "remote-controlling" the cabinet, sipping hot tea in his luxurious hotel room while watching on TV live coverage of how west malaysia gets flooded!

Hi,

I'm just thinking before the Information Minister starts commenting about the BERSIH rally, maybe he should brush up his English language first. I don't know if he didn't understand the questions posted or he didn't know how to answer them.

On a personal view, I am deeply disappointed with the current leadership. What future holds for Malaysia is still left unanswered.

My plead to the leaders is unblock your deaf ears and listen to the cries of the nations.

Firstly i'm not for nor against either opposition or BN. I'm more of neutral at this point. but I'd say things are brewing up. Opposition wants to use this opportunity to stir up as much as possible since election is next year.

That in itself, can be a good thing or a bad. To me, i see it as a good thing. Because it should shake our current government off their comfy seats. If it hasnt, then something else bigger will come. What will happen when the oil prices becomes uncontrollable? what will happen when more children die in NS? what will happen when you get corrupted politicians go free? Every action has a reaction, if we haven't seen one, it's not there is no reaction, but rather, we haven't seen it yet. it's building it and when the day the reactions come bursting all over the streets.. well if you read history books, you'd know. It ain't pretty.

On the side note however, doesn't our information minister reminds you of iraqi's old information minister?

Our Information Minister : http://www.kennysia.com/

Iraqi Information Minister :

Those who followed the Iraq War would know what i mean

The political goons plays chess. They are the players, we, the rakyat, the chess pieces. Damned if we do and damned if we dont.

To think that it is the rakyat's hard earned money that sponsored these chess tournaments.

Today, our heart bleeds....and all we ever wanted was a decent country to be proud of, one we proudly call home.

Who is right and who is wrong? Well, Stephan Hawkings is right when he said, "we run around in circles and suppose, when the truth sits in the middle and knows....."

I cant believe this is happening in Malaysia. During Tun Dr Mahathir's time it was under control and he wouldn't allow things to go out of hand. How can such a havoc happen and nothing can be done?

It's clear cut. It's a peaceful rally. They tried to gain permit but was denied by the authorities under the pretext that it is ILLEGAL! So when Khairy do a rally, it is LEGAL? shouting here and there..acting like a bul*sh*t hero. Pretended to be caught..huh some 'smart qualified kid'..so this is what he learned from UK?

On what basis that it is illegal? Where is the logic behind all these? Will it hurt if they submitted the memorandum to the King and someone accepts it and they will disperse? Is it wrong to express your dissatisfaction this way? and look at The dumb Information Minister stammering when interviewed live by foreign media...I can't understand whaddheck is going on with this Minister..his answers created MORE problems than cure..

I don't know but I gotta feeling the election will not be controlled by these 'loosers' anymore...
