The Day After...

And how the mighty have fallen...! Could anyone have predicted the fall would be this far?

I'm so tired right now from staying up watching the extremely slow results. So won't say much right now til my head is clear.

But bloggers and netizens, you can pat yourselves on the back because anyone who says the Net and blogs would have no effect on this election obviously didn't know what they were talking about! :-D

My wish is for Malaysia to be a non-racial country, where kids can grow up not thinking they are malays, chinese or indians but just malaysians.

Hopefully the opposition parties can get their act together and change the status quo

It's time for national reconciliation. The people have spoken.

on yes, on more thing, Pak Lah, please just quit. and BTW we are not big on Najib either, UMNO and BN needs to re-invent if they are ever to be relevant again

cheers!

Once the dust settles, it's important to affect some real change. Felling a giant is nice and good for fairy tales. But what will hopefully happen now, is a lot of hard work from both sides of the political divide, to improve things for our country. Regardless of how precarious things seem now, I am hopeful that we will turn out okay, only if we all come together and work towards a solid goal.

Dear Marina

What a blood-bath!!

Long Live People Power!!

There is a strong belief that the RAHMAN prophecy will be completed soon. In any event, AAB will either have to 'do the honourable thing' or be elbowed out by UMNO, not later than next week-end.

The British call this the 'Man Overboard' strategy when the wife of the Deputy PM will be seen busy shopping for new curtains and carpets for the PM's official residence. Someone has to take the blame, and who else should it be, but the Great Leader.

Regardless of what Western leaders would do under these circumstances, the top leadership of the BARISAN government, the veterans, the Iron Lady, Mohamad s/o Mohamad, MB of Bukit Cheraka,
R2D2 Robokop $6B Forexloosecannon, etc., has to go.

Corruption (at all levels in Govt.), croneyism, crime, inflation, cost of living rise, oil price, toll charges and racial polarisation are at their worst levels.

If these chatised ex- ‘People’s Reps’ try and find a way in through the back door – as Senators, state councillors, Gaji Buta chairpersons of PLC – there should be another voter-revolt.

These are the real issues that the citizens are concerned about; NOT whether we hold the world record for the longest ketupat or mega roti chanai!!

There is also that ridiculous claim that per capita income grew by 40% in 4 years, placing growth here at the highest in the world!! Right or not, the public perception is that economic statistics have been 'massaged' close to the elections.

I predict more good news will come with the findings of the Royal Commission (where many bigwigs were seen to be 'economical with the truth') on the judiciary debacle.

The Indians may have temporarily lost the battle in the now vacant Ministerial and Deputy Ministers' posts, but they have won the war. The message to the (recent) incumbents is clear - reform or vacate. To the outgoing ‘big-wig’ member for Sg. Siput, I say, good riddance!!

Now, for a better, united truly multi-racial and tolerant Malaysia, the country we all love!!

donplaypuks

ps I still think more Malay ladies like you should enter politics. As you have just witnessed, our collective consciousness has been awakened!!

Whether I agree with Koh Tsu Koon's politics or not, I take my hat off to him. Character and integrity oozed from every pore of his countenance in his post-election tv appearance. This is the way it should be - humble in victory, gracious in defeat.

What a sharp contrast to the quick-exit 'goodbye' 'big-wig' member for Sg. Siput, the indelible sour-faced election chief and stony-faced 'kalah, kalah-lah'in-denial Pak Lah.

The TV coverage by RTM 1, and Ch. 501 & 502 Astro was so pathetic, it was beyond belief. They just plain refused to present a Leader Board showing continuous up-date on the overall 'score'. Worst, there was clearly an attempt to gloss over the result in Selangor and Perak.

What next - ownership of media by political parties should be proscribed once and for all!!

Reasons why BN lost ;

1) Pak Lah has no qualms and oblivious to the fact that he potrays himself as so inefficient and lazy and also without any bright ideas. He didn't live up to the expectations locally and internationally as the CEO of Malaysia Inc.

2) KJ portrays himself as cocky and pretentious. Too ambitious for anyone and his dabble in most of the govt's administration lacks taste and often deemed as unbecoming

3) Dr M shoes are too big to be filled by Pak Lah. Moreover Pak Lah does not have a clue on how to govern Malaysia efficiently. This is the sentiment of the public majority.

4) For the first time, the REAL silent majority has their say and opted to stifle the govt whom they perceived as corrupt and 'sombong bodoh'.

5) Blatant show offs of riches and misuse of public funds by Pak Lah ad his politicians (airbus, yacht, SCOMI, palace of Datuk Zakaria, one eyed Jasin MP etc) irritates the voters. What more with the rising costs of living

6) Pak Lah should have done better in marrying Jeanne who is actually his brother in law's ex wife. In Malay custom, this is taboo and can constitute as near 'incest'.

7) The so many countless lies or flip flopping by Pak Lah and his policies. No integrity.

8) The people is more sophisticated and they are more clever in choosing the candidates. Gone were the days when the people can only sit and accept the govt's propaganda during elections. That's why certain candidates can win in a tough seat (eg; Mukhriz) while certain candidates that are deemed stupid, corrupted or plain unlikeable, lost.

9) People perceive Malaysia as a company (like during TDM's time). If the company is being headed by a CEO which decreases the shareholders' wealth, then the CEO should be sacked.

AP Queen would not have any hope left and so she will probably cry for the winning team.

indeed, how the mighty has fallen. perhaps it was the pride that preceded the fall but fell they did, the powers that be(were).
authority is God given as it is sacrosanct, only to those who believe in the Almighty. and such authority comes with its righteous discharge out reverential fear.
if the powers that be do not accord the reverence upon such authority but abuse it to no end, then such God given authority would be taken away. of course, one may continue to forcibly prolong such intoxicating authority but the inevitable would be the loss of one's moral compass.
the crux of life is to fear God, to show compassion to the down trodden, the widows and orphans. certainly not to indulge in one's fleshly passions to the detriment of those around.
nevertheless, it is hoped that all wrongs be made right and that ALL may come to repentance. after all, regardless of our societal, racial and communal origins, we do hail indeed from the same source.
indeed, it should always be for God, king and country.
God bless our country Malaysia and all herein!!!

However, I'd have to agree with what your father Dr. M had said yesterday that it's not about the support of the opposition parties per se, but rather a "strong" feeling against Barisan Nasional's administration.

Well, at least, it shows that BN hasn't got any sort of political immunity whatsoever and hopefully, that realised fact will push them to work much much harder, for everybody's sake.

now let's all focus on the DAP PKR and PAS and see if they will keep their promises!!!!

it's easy to be an arm chair critic but let's see they can do what they preach.

i am not too afraid of DAP ruling though i am a malay but is more afraid of what PAS will do. PAS *must* acknowledge that this is a multi-ethnic and multi-religion society and above all not to impose PAS's islamic 'values' on all Muslims in Malaysia. meaning orthodox Muslim values. even Muslims must be respected as to how they practise their religion personally.

Hi folks, I can't respond to each and every one of you so will try and do general responses. First of all, thanks for congratulatory messages to my brother. I will pass them on.

Secondly, in case anyone hasn't read it, my father called a press conference yesterday and called for Pak Lah's resignation. Read here http://www.utusan.com.my/utusan/info.asp?y=2008&dt=0310&pub=Utusan_Malaysia&sec=Muka_Hadapan&pg=mh_10.htm

There has also been a call for a gathering of people at Istana Negara this morning for the same purpose. At the moment I can't get info on whether it happened or not.

Thirdly, I can't take credit for helping to bring about these election results. I think the credit belongs to all the bloggers collectively as well as to all the Netizens who read, comment and pass on what is in the blogs.

Fourthly, to say that only some communities wanted this change would be wrong. ALL communities wanted this change, that's why even those who would normally have voted BN voted for the Opposition, or at the very least, spoilt their vote.To say otherwise would be to deny the fact.

Lastly, what do I think of the results? I'm happy for my brother, I'm sad for Kedah but elsewhere I'm OK with it. This gives the DAP/PKR/PAS lot a chance to truly prove themselves and if not, then we know what to do next elections. The lesson everyone, regardless of party should take from this, is that the power IS with the people and we're not afraid to use it.

Will post more later when I get a chance. Just posting comments takes forever!!! But thanks, all!

One more thing, messages to Tun M should be sent via his aide, Sufi Yusof, sufi71@gmail.com.

Taken from NST, comment by Ali Rustam
A shaken looking Umno vice-president, Datuk Seri Ali Rustam said the rakyat still loved the Barisan Nasional but wanted to teach it a lesson."It seems like 1969 where the Alliance lost several state governments. We did expect to lose some seats but not as low as this," said Ali who arrived at 1.45am. He said voters voted according to sentiment and not according to candidates.
Dear Sir, please be informed that the people has spoken and please get over being in denial state and stop being defensive. The people are all very clever and know what they want.

The power of the people has been demonstrated. This is such a big day for us people. We have won and our MPs will have to learn to do their jobs in a more professional manner. Or in the next election we shall show them who is the real boss.

what I'm saying is, tun M shd keep away. His time is over. And you guys don't help the family and other M'sians ( esp rural malays, indians and chinese who need better housing, cheaper food, healthcare).

The result of the last 12th General Election has a drastic IMPACT on the BN wiv BN LOSING 4 STATES TO THE OPPOSITIONS. Even during ur dad's, Tun Mahathir's era, none of the states were ever rule by the oppositions (exception for Kelantan). PAK LAH WAKE UP FROM UR SLUMBER SLEEP... DO NOT ASSUME tat the Malaysian voters will forever be voting the SCALE symbol and supporting the SCALE!!! The BN may have the support in the East Malaysia especially in rural areas where the development is still very much needed. To ensure democracy continue to survive and thrive in Malaysia, the electoral system must be reviewed. As it is, the discrepancy between number of voters in urban and rural seats is too great. For example, in P187 Kinabatangan (Sabah) the total number of voters is 19,554 whereas for P115 Batu (FT Wilayah) the total number of voters is 70,544. The differential is 3.6 times. Basically, it means the 19,554 voters in Kinabatangan is allowed to sent one MP to the Parliament whereas a much larger number of voters in Batu is allowed to send also one representative.

It is much easier for the party in power to ensure that the rural voters continue to vote for them due to lack of access to unbiased information and by threat or promise of continue economic development in their constituency.

Most rural voters cannot differentiate between the ruling party and the government are two different things. An opposition party that won an election will form the government of the day and can bring development. The voters are only ‘punished’ (by withholding development fund); if the constituent they are in ‘belongs’ to the opposition and the opposition parties did not form the government of the day.

The Election Commission must be revamped as it is openly pro Barisan. Abdul Rashid must go.

rkaru said...

MM,

I hope both parties realise that in most cases, except Kelantan, the Oppo didn't win the Election, but rather BN lost it. Cases in point; Shahrizat and Hwa Beng. These, in my opinion at least, were two performing MPs. It was just unfortunate that sentiments towards BN were at an all time low and they just got swept along in the tidal wave.

To BN, buck up if you do not want to suffer further losses. To the Oppo, don't get too smug. In most cases the people didn't vote you in because we love you, but because we want to vote BN out. So take this opportunity and prove yourselves.

To tell you the truth, in previous elections my vote had been automatic for BN, more so because of my reverence to Tun than anything else. But this time around with all the things that have been happening around us, I had been undecided right till the moment I got the voting slips in my hands. I won't say who I voted for in the end, but irregardless, I was very pleased with the outcome of this PRU12.

Just to add a bit more, what you said about people who normally voted for BN did otherwise this time around or at least spoilt their votes was true. I watched the election programs until 2:30 am that day. Feeling great that Penang has a new start and BN is not having it this time. The next day when I woke up, I sms my wife asking about the final results (she went back to Johor to cast her vote there). "Penang and Selangor are in opposition's hands too!" she told me. I was in bath room, standing under the shower. When I saw the message, I felt a surge of current inside me, and I started crying, and laughing and the same time standing there. Why did I have such a reaction? Malaysians will understand. That was really a good sunday.

I would have to say this, Appointing Pak Lah as PM is the greatest legacy left behind by TDM. If DSAI were to be made PM, we wont be witnessing such an historic day!

HIDUP MALAYSIA!

Mosbert said...

The pent up feelings of the rakyat - silenced for years under TDM's iron-fisted rule (remember, he was far more liberal in invoking the ISA during his tenure than AAB was) was finally allowed to bubble to the surface during the past few years. Yes, there were excesses in both regimes, but where Tun had his ear to the ground, AAB cut himself off completely from what was happening on the ground. Yes men and advisors told him only what he wanted to hear (or what they wanted him to hear)and so he ended up making many mistakes. And that is what cost him dearly. But for Tun to put the blame squarely on AAB is a bit rich. Parti Keadilan Rakyat is his creation. Dismissing Anwar off hand was a big mistake both leaders made.
Still, it will be interesting to see how BN reinvents itself after this. Some hard decisions have to be made and blinkers taken off. Good luck to all.

What has happened here is total destruction to Country, Government, Umno & BN. It's no laughing matter after the harwork of more than 50 years started off by Dato Onn Jaffar right down to Dr.M's great leadership of 22 years. Everything has gone down to the drain & it's very sad & frustrating.

Pas having gained momentum even in KL is no victorious celebration for level minded Malaysians, it's a cause of concern & highly disturbing. It is very sad that the people were pushed to this extend, very sad.

A major contributor to this disaster is PM & KJ, they are the reason why BN has been destroyed with no mercy. PM must resign immediately & KJ shouldn't be brought into the administration.

How is the Government & Country ever going to recover from this damage by PM & KJ? What sort of Government is PM going to hand over to DPM? How is the Cabinet going to function with BN having been washed out especially with MIC & Gerakan gone, MCA & Umno hanging on a life support machine! This is disaster hard to fix, nothing but distruction. It's the aftermath of a Tsunami.

God has given Tun Dr.M new life for a reason, God saw what was coming, something that no one else including the opposition ever saw.
God Bless Malaysia!

This happened to me on polling day.
My wife and I went early, and after that we had a leisurely breakfast of nasi lemak and kaya toast at a kopitiam. Everything was fine and as usual we do not ask each other who we voted for. That has been our understanding all along.
However, when we were home, I found her sobbing uncontrollably on the bed. She was unconsolable. In the end she managed to calm herself down and admitted to me that she just voted opposition. She had always faithfully voted BN for the last 5 general elections, she said.
Since she opened up, I dared to ask her why the sudden switch. She told me that enough is enough. The outpouring of her grouses from Datuk Zakaria Deros, to the 200million jet, the beating up of demonstartors, to Nazri to Zam, came non stop and it was such a revelation that this usually quiet housewife had so much pent up emotions that she kept all this while. She calmed down after that and after telling all that, she was back to her cheerful self. In a way, I rediscovered my wife on that day, and wondered whether those who switched sides did it for the same reason. My vote? It's confidential lah!

Well while we harp on the amount of progress we made in proving we are not spineless fools, so much has yet to be corrected:

There were still some crap elected to power.People have become clouded with emotion that they chose to neglect ethnic parties which alone can represent their ethnic communities' specific woes. This was a time tested theory since 1957. Instead of throwing the perpetrator, we have chucked his friends while he remains. Well, the next elections is still 5 years away ... and we will see what these people can do for Malaysia. Let us hope the change would not ruin whatever the leaving governments have achieved. This includes development, industrialization, not going back to the 60s mentality of cheap groceries and oil, the NO-NO for the hudud law and most IMPORTANTLY VISION 2020; some 12 years from now. If they give up on that, then there is no point in elections anymore.

On the bright side, the internet and blogging community have been praised for being alternative voices of truth; serve those really dumb people who are now longer in power now right! It was even on Channel NewsAsia; a Singapore channel. And it is not the end of the world for BN; they can still show better as their predecessors have done. They have experience more than any party in governance and if they are wise, they would use that. Rising prices is a global thing, but if we are becoming marketable and more lucrative; then what is the issue? The question is how long will we focus on bread and butter issues while our fellow nations soar high. Think.

However the people did choose wisely. The happier and more developed states like Johor are still happy with the government because of good STATE governance. So, it just shows what they need to get the votes!

Dear All,

As a Singaporean with strong Malaysian roots (Mum was from Penang and Dad from Selangor), I was elated to see the democratic process in full play. This was in spite of the alleged gerrymandering and shifting of posts.

I am hopeful for the fact that what has happened in Malaysia may also happen in countries that have had the same party in government since independence. It gives hope to these countries that change is possible and that change does not lead to ruin and riots. In fact, it may actually lead to renewal.

Malaysia Boleh!

I am not old enough to vote yet, so naturally, I am thrilled the Opposition swept my swept (Penang) and denied the BN its 2/3 majority.

For the first time in history, I will have an obvious, completely bias free way to ascertain which party represents the best hope for the people.

I hope to see big changes in the way things are done. Firstly, to remove the bloody unnecessary fields of Race (Bangsa) and Religion (Agama) from all state government forms.

State, because Parliament will probably not approve this measure, seeing as they need to divide and conquer us like the British did during the colonial area.

Second, to allow the best people, chosen by the people, to lead the government of the people.

When I see states like Perak, where DAP obviously won the most seats, it is only in the interest of the people that one man or woman be chosen from within that party to become Mentri Besar.

Similarly, if the people decide PAS is the better representative of the people, then one among them should be made Mentri Besar.

It saddens me when requirements like race and religion are imposed. We would be eliminating capable people before they can even prove themselves.

Third, I wish to see more justice in our schools and education system.

What am I referring to? Periods in my high school life when justice was not served:

1 My friends losing a debating competition because according to the judges (paraphrase), they didn't have a Malay in their team. Seeing as their school was a Chinese-medium school, this requirement seems like a variant of the must-not-have-a-foreign-husband-requirement (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7255310.stm).

2 The Physics Olympiad, where three of the five spots for this prestigious competition must be filled by Bumiputras, resulting in friends of mine occupying the 3rd and 5th spot in the national rankings to be dropped from the national team.

I understand it's a form of "face-saving" that these children can't qualify on merit. But that's what they are, CHILDREN!

We should not impose the belief that they can get anything they want because they are bumiputras, but that they should work hard for their success, and earn their reward.

In contrast, try explaining to a child that he lost because his great-great-grandfather was a migrant.

And anyway, sending inferior representatives to international competitions only means we "lose-face" on an international level. Refer to Malaysian Football Team.

I better stop here, I seem to be getting ahead of myself. After all, the opposition hasn't even been in power for even one week.

In conclusion, all I am asking for is a level playing field.

And I'm not expecting much.

So surprise me.

When the Rakyat complained, they were pushed aside. When they demonstrated, they were told to use the Ballot Boxes.
Now the Rakyat has used the Ballot Boxes. What is the BN Govt gonna do? Punish them subtlely? Govt still feeling they are the BOSSES? Not that they are put there by the Rakyat? They are Wakil Rakyat, aren't they? Feel not need to go into all the details of what a Wakil Rakyat is or do I have to?
Would be a sad road to travel for Malaysia should that be the mentality...
Seriously, this polital tsunami was possible becoz for once, voters of ALL races share the same vision...the Chinese & Indians, by themselves, would never be able to accomplish such a gigantic feat w/o the Malays having the same feelings, right? Just look at the ratio of Malays, Chinese & Indians in the electoral lists of most of the constituencies.

BN, the Ball is in your court now...Play it wisely!

Funny how some winners talk of starting a more transparent government and about not subscribing to the excesses of the past through the reviewing of current projects.

And yet no one in the newly minted opposition-held state governments has mentioned setting up oversight committees to review themselves.

I suspect it won't be long before it is politics as usual in the opposition governments... despite the best of intentions.

It shows that the landslide win by Pak Lah in the 2004 General Elections was just a fake win. But this 12th General Election is the genuine test for Paklah after his first term as PM.
But i view that majority of the voters were trying to show their unhappiness towards the present scenario whete the cost of living is getting more expensive, salary increase only specifically for goverment servants but not all workers in the private or business sector caused the escalating price of essential goods, the KJ, Kalimullah anfd Patrick Lim factor where they are seen to be influencing the government, the kissing of the kris by Hisham uttering racial remarks to the non malays and other sensitive religious issues like converts Muslim bodies are snatched away by the Islamic authorities eventhough they are not practising Islam upon their death.
But this 12th Election is a wake up call to the Federal Government after 50 years of independence that it will be tougher in the future for BN to remain in power as there will be more challenging issues to deal with the much more educated Malaysians.

This is a response to REWARP.

It is enshrined in the Constitution that the Menteri Besar from all States in M'sia (except Penang, Melaka, Sarawak, Sabah) must be a Malay. And by juxtaposition, that means he must be a Muslim too.

So, don't blame the Opposition of practicing the bad habits of BN in choosing only selected men and denying the best talents to lead. I think their choice of MB in Perak speaks volume of their ability to cooperate at this present point in time so soon after the elections.
