This story first came out in the Malaysian Insider on Monday April 7. Then yesterday in the Singapore Business Times. Of course, nothing in our papers although the Insider is related to the NST.
Just wondering how PM is preparing to react to this?
Johor Umno lobby in move to call for Abdullah's exit
Singapore Business Times - 08 Apr 2008
PRIME Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will probably not serve out his
full term as he is likely to be persuaded to step down in a managed,
but dignified, exit.
According to officials of the ruling United Malays National
Organisation (Umno), of which Mr Abdullah is president, a Saturday
meeting of the Johor Umno liaison committee, the state's highest
policy making body, resolved that Mr Abdullah should step down but in
a manner that should not humiliate him in any way.
'The anger on the ground is just too strong for him to stay,' one of
the officials said, 'but it must be done in a courteous manner.'
On a timetable for succession, the official was less clear, implying
there was either no clear consensus or that Mr Abdullah could map out
his own schedule if he so wished. Umno has decided to hold party
elections in December.
The Johor lobby is immensely powerful in Umno as the state is not only
the historical birthplace of the party but has the most senior office
bearers within Umno so the resolution is significant and carries
weight.
There are six ministers in the Cabinet from Johor, the most from any
one state, and at least one serving Umno vice-president -
International Trade Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
If it pans out, Mr Abdullah's long goodbye will have striking
parallels with the ouster of Tunku Abdul Rahman, the country's first
prime minister, who saw the writing on the wall not long after the
1969 elections when his then ruling Alliance coalition fared dismally
and announced that he would step down in September 1970, a year after
the elections.
It isn't clear if Mr Abdullah can hold out for that long. In addition,
in the Tunku's case, the country was already being led by Abdul Razak
Hussein, his deputy then, in the capacity as head of the National
Operations Council.
Malaysia was then administered by the NOC because an emergency had
been declared after racial riots broke out in the aftermath of the
election. In yet another parallel, Mr Abdullah's current deputy is
Najib Razak, the eldest son of Mr Abdul Razak.
Mr Abdullah is expected to be told formally of Johor Umno's decision
by Umno liaison chief Ghani Othman, the state's Chief Minister, this
Friday when the prime minister makes an official visit to the state.
It isn't clear how he will react as Johor Umno has traditionally been
among his strongest supporters. Indeed, in recent days, Mr Abdullah
has repeatedly vowed that he would not resign, insisting that he
'would stay and fight'

Being a leader comes with a couple of job description. Badawi had enjoyed the power that comes with it. Being responsible is also the job description. When your party lost the general election big time and you are the leader, then by god, do the right thing.
A gentleman and true leader would take full responsibility and step down in a gentleman manner. That was what Koh Soo Kun did and everyone respected him for that. It's time to take a bow before things get ugly....They usually do. It's to do with the murphy's law
This is what a section of his party wants of him, but the most recent survey shows 51% of Malaysians still wants him to remain as their PM.
Of the Malays, 63% wants him to remain as PM. Do you blame him if he decides to stay on? This picture is blown out of all proportion by the media. MM's shenanigans have blurred the picture even more.
MM should lay off and allow the PM to carry out his national duties without distraction.
All personal agendas should be put aside for the nation's interest!

Will not Najib taking over be an issue. He is equally responsible. Look at the umpteen trips he took to Kelantan promising the Kelantanese a Heaven on Earth. It was a washout there too. The whole lot of them holding senior positions should step down. Not Pak Lah alone.
MM,
i believe the party in question should have internal mechanisms to displace their non-performing or unpopular leaders. obviously these mechanisms must be democratic, scientific and conclusive.
now whether this results in a gracious exit or otherwise should not be the main focus of discussion. it's just part and parcel of being a leader, being able to deal with the fall. however, if it's customary, as malays, to have 'adab' over their ex-leaders, well that's another matter, but there must be no exclusion to the democratic process.
one more thing, why should we assume that the deputy gets the top job? let the process decide.
We're still counting Pak Lah's days...
Am talking as a grass root leader in Merbok Division, there are 106 branches in the Division, just call and speak to any of the branch leader what they think of Pak Lah as PM and President of UMNO and the answer is Pak Lah must RESIGNED NOW.
Unfortunately and very sad the Ketua Bahagian and its Deputy are still day dreaming and still say Pak Lah is OK.Division committe members blasted the ketua bahagian and request for him to have a dialog with all the branch head but he is adamant and refused to meet all branch head.
Hopefully UMNO Johor act can influence other Division to do the same.
Everybody wants to leave when they are at the top. Just before GE12, AAB was at the top. Now, he is down at the pit. Of course he won't quit, at least not now. At least when he gets closer to near the top. It would be downright embarassing to quit now.
So be it. Let him stay. Let him bring UMNO and the whole BN gang to a new low in 5 years time.
After all, he thought, I'm already at this low, so how low more can I go? And the answer is, all the way low to the point of no return!
AAB to ste down is definitely a goo proposal by UMNO division and state. He has to show respect to people voice and stop being so arrogant. However the main thing is discharge of AAB alone can't make any different in gaining people support to UMNO Mind change by UMNO top leader and to start with divisional level is crucial in serving Malaysian people a preent. If UMNO still can't accept new critical idea from people and value people that want to contribute to UMNO then I think forget about the idea of UMNO Reform" as loudly voiced by UMNO leader at present. They have to accept the new generation concept of voicing out and don't take this as challenge but as opportunity to improve. Najib had been voicing his opinion on Blue Ocean strategy on tapping opportunity where other people ignore. I fully understand that. But just mere saying by not realizing is not enough. Explore new perspective in UMNO. Please change people.
I strongly believe that he should step down. But one problem will pop up. Is Najib good enough? If you ask 10 Malays, 9 of them will say a comprehensive "NO".If you ask 10 Malaysians, all of them will say "NO".
The process of choosing a successor is traditionally been the way all this while. It is the worst possible way because Malaysians will have no say or right whatsoever in determining their leader.
The thought of Najib becomes the next PM sends shivers through my spine.
I'd rather have Abdullah stay on till the next General Election and let the people shove them both aside.
But I am optimistic about the prospect of post April 14.
hello,
i need a clarification from novice01.which survey are you quoting from? is it from KJ dominated medias?there is no personal agenda on asking PM to step down.It is NATIONAL agenda.
TQ
Stepping down in a dignified, managed exit. Come on. Who do they take us for ?
The BN government is increasingly looking like the Titanic. The mud slinging going on between Badawi, Mahathir and Razaleigh is leaving the BN regime in tatters. This is not helped by spineless individuals like Nazri Aziz and Zahid Hamidi who would cheer on anyone who is PM but immediately chastise the individual once he is no longer PM. (Remember, dear Mahathir and Badawi, "Melayu mudah lupa".) Then, we have the Ong brothers from MCA talking trash while MIC and Gerakan are busy re-inventing themselves in circles.
We also hear that document and files have gone missing in states ruled by Pakatan Rakyat. Personally if you asked me, I don't trust the BN government, the Police, the Judiciary, the AG, the Elections Commission and the civil service.
Due to this, I believe that Pakatan Rakyat must not waste any time to form the government. The BN government is now falling from within. If we as a nation don't bail out from this spiral, we as a nation may end up in the abyss with Badawi and Company! We must have regime change by having a PR government in place. We must not let the BN regime stay in power for another 5 years because by the time the next GE comes, the nations wealth would have been stripped clean and all evidence involving the sins of the BN regime would have been wiped clean by then.
Some people are against the crossing over of elected BN reps to PR. They feel this is a betrayal of the voter's trust. What I would like to suggest is why not, come April 28, if there are any BN MP's who are disillusioned and dissatisfied with the BN regime, they can declare themselves as Independent MP's and join the 82 PR MP's in passing a motion of no confidence on Badawi and his government.
I think His Majesty the Yang Dipertuan Agung, would not consent for another GE. Rather, the 82 PR MP's can form a Minority government. Infact, this government can also go on to be a Government of National Reconciliation by having not only the Independent MP's with them but also BN MP's as well, so long as they are clean.
Therefore, there is no need to wait for Datuk Seri Anwar to get to Parliament for this to happen. With Datuk Seri Anwar by her side, I'm sure Leader of the Opposition, Datin Seri Dr. Wan Azizah will make a good PM. Time is of the essence. We must not let this opportunity slip away. Go for regime change now!
I 100% agree to Navi's said - The whole lot of them holding senior positions should step down. Not Pak Lah alone.
All those big sharks who plays donkey games with their ultimate egos.
I think you should concentrate more on your father than on the current administration.
Tun Mahathir is fast losing every iota of respect (and pity) he has garnered thus far and without that respect to shield him from his misdeeds during his lifetime, it would be very evident what kind of man he was and is.
I assure you I am not the only person to see the irony in Tun calling the honorable and brave Karpal Singh the “most contemptible of politicians and individuals.”
Of course, then again, this is a man who believes the Jews rule the world by proxy.
I do not mean any disrespect with this post, and I am aware that comments towards family sting deeper, but I just feel the need to voice out to someone who can get the message across to him, and who better than you.
He only responds to a 30,000 man and women demonstrate with water canons and tear gas accompanied with a blatant lie..like ethnic cleansing or what ever.
What I read in the report referred to does not come anywhere close. so myabe Johor UMNO just wasting time la.
But then who is going to demonstrate to rid him from UMNO's presidency and Malaysia's PM? Surely not Hindraf or Bersih...UMNO can ah? I know not their culture, tradition or custom...so they say la.
Dollah tells the Johorean:
Who do you want to replace me with as the PM and President of UMNO?
If Najib, I will stay on until you find a better man.
I don't care what you do with KJ
if you think he is that stupid then teach him a good lesson.
(What is a muslim's way?)
I think you all fail to realise what disrupting the PM's position at this point of time will do to our economy. Like it or not we live in a global environment. When there is upheaval in the local political scene, it worries investors. We are so dependent on foreign investment. Yes it would be nice to have a better PM. As we all know, everyone of them are corrupted in one way or another. It is times like these that foreigners who are eyeing M'sia will jump in. Yes, we need to spring clean our country - but please dont do it at the expense of destroying our economy. It wont take very long for Malaysia to end up like an African nation. We need to preserve what we have achieved so far and find a better means of solving the problem, uprooting the leader without a a clear person next in line is just too dangerous for our country. If we continue this trend, we would be very close to what the royal family did early in our history when they went into cohorts with the British just to solve their internal problem. Do we want another invasion? It will happen, not invasion/colonization of the conventional kind but of the financial and economical kind. Of course it is already happening but with leadership upheaval, we're just opening the door and inviting trouble of the global kind.
I'm compelled to write here after reading this piece of heart wrenching news:
KUALA LUMPUR: DAP chairman Karpal Singh has called on former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to stop championing the cause of the opposition and persistently attacking Prime Minister Datuk SeriAbdullah Ahmad Badawi.
"The opposition does not need the unsolicited support of Dr Mahathir to ensure that the Barisan Nasional government is kept on its toes.
"Dr Mahathir should, perhaps, devote more time to his grandchildren in the twilight years of his life," said Karpal, who is also the Bukit Gelugor MP, in a statement yesterday.
"It is time for him (Dr Mahathir) to keep his peace and let the opposition keep the government of Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in check."
Karpal said the opposition with its 82 seats in parliament had the numbers to achieve this objective.
Karpal said the opposition did not need personalities like Dr Mahathir who went to the extent of deregistering Umno in 1988 and generally behaved in a dictatorial manner.
Karpal pointed out that Dr Mahathir's abuse of power when he was prime minister was conceded by Umno leaders, including Abdullah.
"He had publicly stated that Dr Mahathir was responsible for Operasi Lallang.
"I am sure Umno members will agree with what I am saying. I don't think Umno members today hold him (Dr Mahathir) in high esteem." - NST
How can the current Malay leader (via Umno's paper) let a known anti Malay bigot, condemns a highly respected Malay statesman to that extent? I am indeed sad.
Karpal Singh even had the audacity to say that Umno members would agree with him. He must be a senile already. What he said was a series of fallacy which shows how vindictive he is. At 68, Karpal SIngh should also stay home and play with his grandkids.
Stop condemning Tun Dr Mahathir coz obviously he has done more to the national and international stage than Karpal Singh. Any sane Umno member or Malays in general just ask this question to themselves - what has Karpal Singh done to you as compared to what Tun had achieved.
Karpal Singh, you're a dimwit. Stop acting like you're an angel yourself. It's just a matter of time before people discover any skeletons in your closet.
Penny dropping everywhere but in the no 1 mind.
Its the writing on the wall?today 10 april 08 all hell break loose.UMNO Kedah had a meeting with Deputy President and senior supreme council members consists of Mahyudin ,Ali Russtam,Rafidah Aziz,Noraini,Mat taib,Ku Adnan,Azim Zabidi and their team.Place CINTA SAYANG GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB Sungai Petani, immediately after Najibs opening speech the floor was open for question, speakers mostly Division Head and Division Secretary bombarded Najib left and right and demanded PAK LAH to resign. They insisted Najib to take over as President and Mahyudin as Deputy, one speaker even addressed Najib President.
The final blow came from Tan Sri Kadir Sheikh Fadir Kulim/Bandar Baru and Abd Rahman Ariffin Jerlun, they make it very clear that PAK LAH IS THE CAUSE OF THE DOWNFALL OF UMNO.And former MB Mahathir Khalid must be responsible for the down fall of Kedah he must also resign as UMNO Kedah Liason Chief.
Yes , Pak Lah definately hv to step down.... If Najib go no Gut ... let Muhyudin bebome the President and PM....
If this had been an EPL Football game, then the UK MSM would have reported 'Derby County Thrash MU
5-0.'
Being M'sia they have reported 'MU Thrash Derby 0-5 !!'
Corruption, racism, dishonesty, arrogance, spindoctoring and self-denial are the true causes of the GE debacle for Perak & BN.
Dear Pak Lah
Assalamualaikum, warahmatullahi, wabarakah, tu.
The numerous calls for your stepping down, must be felt very deeply by you at this point of time. As a layman, I have been constantly following your development, as well as Tun Mahathir (TM) , as I have the highest regards to TM all the 22years he was the PM, his successes and failures. After hearing his speeches, live anywhere I was able to attend and also by viewing it from the UTube, I have realized this Pak Lah, that you have hurt this man's feelings and as such he is doing what he is doing. After taking over the helm from him, you either conscious or unconsciously have over sidelined him. How ever hard headed TM can be, he is still a human being with feelings that need to be given attention to and be heard and be respected like any ordinary man. Even though it is my own personal opinion that this is no ordinary man we are talking about looking at his achievements and how well and strong he took control of his leadership. His successes in keeping us safe from harm, and downfall is something that we need to remember always. As a human being, I can feel the hurt TM is going through with what ever is happening knowing how much he must believe in his own ideologies and principals and what he has done for us, and left us with a total packaged plan that only needed to be implemented to bring our country further successes in economic development. I do think that others too share the opinion that I carry.
The constant talk on the ground, within and outside of UMNO now is whether you should step down or not. YOU DO NOT NEED TO STEP DOWN provided you take the following steps critical in bringing UMNO and the government in the right direction :
1. Get TM back on your side, which you must do, for as long as he is still around. Give him the respect that he needed, let him be free to meet his old friends and voice his opinions and help to revive UMNO. Tap his ideas and vision and try to emulate with yours.
2. Form a Presidential and Prime Ministers Advisory panel, which shall include TM and other senior politician of your choice. But surely there are certain guidelines and etiquettes which should blend with the entire process of governing. This panel shall act as a Think Tank and advisory to you for all critical decisions that you will make. Very Islamic in nature, the "Mushuarah" concept. This concept will also be good to provide a balance in the decisions you make.
3. I think this next formula will be critical, Get the "Scenic bridge" and the double tracking rail project on the road. This will link Singapore, PTP, Pasir Gudang Port and the Senai Airport Central HUB, for cargo transit through, road, rail, air and the sea through the straits of Johore.
Continue to be the PM and retire peacefully.
Wabillahi-taufil-walhidayah-wassalamualaikum.
