So much has been focussed on Barack Obama's middle name Hussein that few have asked what his first name means. I only realised this last night while reading his autobiography 'Dreams From My Father', published before he even became a Senator for Illinois.
A friend of his at Occidental College in California asked him what his name meant.
"It means 'blessing' in Arabic. My grandfather was a Muslim" he explained.
For me, and probably any other Muslim reading that, it was an "Aha!" moment. Of course! Barack comes from 'barakah' or in Malay, 'rezeki'.
Today Barack's barakah showed itself. The son of a Kenyan father and an American mother, born in Hawaii and brought up in part in Indonesia, became President of the United States. A first in American history in so many ways.
I must say I am relieved and like so many other non-Americans who were glued to our TV screens this morning, thrilled to bits. Who knows what sort of American President Obama will be? We will certainly find out in the years to come. But for the moment, just the very idea of this young fresh-looking, different-looking man being in the White House is thrilling simply because it was unimaginable not so long ago, when it seemed we will never see the end of that inward-looking arrogant aggressive Bush-type presidency.
And oh, how nice to think of Michelle Obama as First Lady! She is what women look like all over the world these days, not Laura Bush, not Cindy McCain.
I just watched Obama's victory speech. How refreshing to see a victor who does not crow over his enemies, who is gracious towards the losers as well as those who did not vote for him. And who uses the opportunity of victory to reconcile and to unite.
"In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long." he said, "..And while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress."
He reaches out to "... those Americans whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won your vote tonight, but I hear your voices. I need your help. And I will be your president, too."
How different is that from what we are used to hearing here, where divides are maintained and even enlarged after elections?
John McCain's speech conceding victory to Obama was no less gracious. He told his forlorn crowd that he called President-elect Obama to congratulate him and added, "In a contest as long and difficult as this campaign has been, his success alone commands my respect for his ability and perseverance. But that he managed to do so by inspiring the hopes of so many millions of Americans who had once wrongly believed that they had little at stake or little influence in the election of an American president is something I deeply admire and commend him for achieving."
He then urged "all Americans who supported me to join me in not just congratulating him, but offering our next president our good will and earnest effort to find ways to come together to find the necessary compromises to bridge our differences and help restore our prosperity, defend our security in a dangerous world, and leave our children and grandchildren a stronger, better country than we inherited.
"Whatever our differences, we are fellow Americans. And please believe me when I say no association has ever meant more to me than that."
Our politicians, on all sides, can learn so much from such graciousness. That after the battle of elections is won, there is a bigger challenge, one of uniting the country, that needs to be met and won.It does seem like a change has come over the world. And if a place like the US can change so much as to put someone like Barack Obama, the 'unlikeliest candidate' as he himself put it, in the White House, it gives hope to the rest of us too. Hope that the time will come when we won't have pudgy men with dubious intellects and suspect ethics as our only choices for leaders, that someone fresh, young and even female may one day rise to lead us into the future. If we have the barakah, insyaAllah.

I can only have faith that one day.. sigh.. one fine day we in Malaysia will see this kind of earth moving change and have someone like Obama. WE NEED HIM/HER DESPERATELY!
Those fat ketupats we have in parliament now can go retire in some hill billy town and be little Lord there.. sigh..they are such a disgrace to the nation!
You're too fascinated with the way Barrack and his wife look. What's up with that?
And every acceptance speech by every president elect always starts by congratulating the opponent and they're always about unity... even Bush's speeches were. They have to be. Because of the mud-slinging in every election.
pearl, apa itu fat ketupats?
i dont put high hopes on obama pun.
i mean, now we can see lah whethr apa yg dia ckp will be implemented ke tak...
tak payah puji lebih2 sgt
i wanna ask the same Q like tim yang did; what's up with the look?
Tim and Naquiah, gosh, have you ever seen anyone who looks like Obama in the White House??? That's what I mean. It is very symbolic and very important.Enough of these white guys who have no empathy with the rest of the world or even those different from them in their own country.
We shall see in the years to come whether Obama will live up to his promise. But even if every single American politician makes that gracious acceptance or concession speech, the point I am making is this: Malaysian ones never do.
Obama my man!
You name it, he smashed it.
He is non-abroginal.
He is of non-dominant race.
He is non-continental American.
And he is the President of a 400+years old nation which practice democracy.
Malaysia has a long run to learn.
Can we foresee a Sipadan Island-born Malaysian Filipino become a PM in the future?
M'sian politicians has got a lot to learn. Is everyone's hope too that one day M'sia can elect a PM which goes beyond race & gender.
As I was watching Obama came upstage with The First Lady to be,and their 2 daughters,Chills went down my spine..
I'm not an American and it gave me that feeling.I wonder how those people supporting him.
It is time for change and it is good to see a fresh new young face.Hey come on he is 47 and that is young!!
For the affection he shows to his wife and girls on stage,it makes you think he'll be the kind of man all American woman wants to rule their country.
If only our man can show that kind of affection publicly for their wife and kids..if only
So Marina,I'm glad you posted this.
Oh and for McCain to give that speech in the end, that is gentleman of him.
Dear MM,
Everyone is rooting for Obama as President, I think. But let's pray that he doesn't just spew rhetoric like someone we knew, who asked to work with me, instead of work for me but in the end, me don't know what me is doing?
My take on the president-elect and the results.
http://tmithomas.blogspot.com/2008/11/dare-to-dream-time-to-change.html
Most of all I love his call for patriotism and responsibility!
Just wanna say that I'm a fan of Obama's. His win gives us all hope, whether we are American or not.
WOW...Who would have ever thought that one day an African American will be president. A real inspirational American dream type story.
Americans must be very proud of this historic moment. I think it gives hope not just to Americans but many people world wide that people can looks past prejudices.
0bama memang...
Saribu mongolian pun boleh menag!
Mongolian as Msia PM! That's for a change!
tengok najib & razak apamacam?
If Obama was a Malaysian, and if his gramps was who you say, he'd be in an institution (for "rehabilitation"), or in jail.
He's lucky he's an American. He gets to fulfill his dreams.
Frankly, I am too awed to say a thing. This is a great nation that will get greater as her people become maturer, wiser and more united. My sincere hope is that Obama will be a president at par with the likes of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, et al. For those who sigh over Malaysian pathetic political state, don't feel despair, as US is on the same earth as the one we live in. We share the same global village :o)
God bless America!
if anwar delivered his PM speech, he would have said
Dear MM & friends, you should read news how people around the world are rejoicing for Obama's win. It's like celebration of electing a world president! Awesome..
Obama spoke not only about race, but also how women were not allowed to vote in old times.
Today in Malaysia, we have politicians who can think of ideas like RM1000 to men who are willing to take single mothers as SECOND WIFE.
Long long way to go, Malaysia.

Quick sent more malaysians to USA and hopefully
one day a malaysian will become the next
President OF the USA. or a Senator or a Governor of Hawaii
or Defense Secretary or Post Master General or
Vice President or talk show host or Captain of USS Enterprise
or..........
Suddenly there is hope again. Peace can be given a chance again. I guess Obama represents the hope and aspirations of many ordinary people on Earth.

Fat hopes.. Just look at what happened in PKNS's GM appointment.. Even PAS (PR) is against it! What a bunch of hypocrites!
Chinese nak jadi ACTING GM in PKNS pun tak boleh, you think Malays will change?
I heard other races are ready to change and has done so on Mar 8th, but the Malays?
to Ketuanan Rakyat!
hi MM,
Kerana kebebasan bersuara kita suka menghentam, mengutuk, mencaci orang lain. Kerana kebebasan bersuara kita memandang rendah orang lain, badan kerajaan, NGO dsbnya walaupun adakalanya kita tahu kita salah.
I started writing a comment which turned out to be a little too long..so I took it out as a posting in my blog. See BARAK OBAMA - MALAYSIA's ENEMY No. 1
Oh BTW, Obama has Malaysian relatives! His sister is married to ex-Malaysian's son!!
Wonder which Sultan or Governor is going to locate this guy in Hawaii to quickly give him a Datukship for marrying wisely!!
Should be easy to locate....cannnot be too many Ng in Hawaii, right? Or ask his cousins here in KL or KK!!
I was very moved when I heard Obama's victory speech....this evening, some friends and I are celebrating with champagne - and doughnuts (a l'Americain)
Aha indeed.
But i dont think barakah is "rezeki" in malay, more like "berkat". rezeki is from something else, probably rizq (pardon the transliteration) or sustenance.
"Hope that the time will come when we won't have pudgy men with dubious intellects and suspect ethics as our only choices for leaders,"
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
ROTFL
Naquiah,
Fat ketupats are those sitting in parliament now. BN and PKR... BN got more fat ketupats.
You dont put high hopes on Obama is because you dont understand the meaning of man are made of dreams and Obama has made that dream into a reality!
Whether at the end of the day, Obama manage to fulfill his promises or not for whatever reason(s), no one can fault him for having a vision and dream and wanting to try to it come true! Please remember, he never said it is going to be easy and everybody is going to have a jolly good time! He made realistic promises.
Now back to those fat ketupats we have, I hope you see the difference between our fat ketupats and Obama. Our fat ketupats cannot even make a decent promise and KEEP it (besides keeping their pants on) what more make speeches that can motivate, inspire and renew faith in the country!
the politics here are so different and bordering tribalism.
look at how the federal govt is penalising the PR states. funds are cut-off from the state government. projects promised before the election are now shelved. the list goes on.
america has cross the racial divide in voting Obama to be the President. Here, we are regressing into outright racism where even appointment of a non-malay to head a state enterprise draws so much protest.
And our PM has the temerity to tell us that anyone can be the PM of the country irregardless of race.
I cried when Obama won...again when Obama and McCain each delivered their post-election speeches.
Why? Not becos I'm a crazy supporter of either of the presidential candidates (although I must admit, i tend to lean towards Obama), but becos of the fact that we Malaysians def have a long way to go before every reaching that sort of maturity in politics.
hi Khyrel,
i wasn’t aware of the significance of Obama’s first name till yesterday. and then i was immediately reminded of the old Jewish name, “Baruch”, which means “blessed”. indeed, Obama is. anyway, there’s a better Hebrew equivalent to “Berkat” and that’s actually “Berakhot”. ultimately we’re looking at an old semitic name, so i hope Muslims won’t get too excited and try to claim exclusive association with Obama. heh!
i can only hope that Obama has the political will, and is given further berkat from the Almighty, to inject this very thing called “berkat” in his foreign policies. enough with economic sanctions bully tactics and unfair FTAs. no more carpet bombing people, rather show us some luuurve with some carpet berkat :D
encik Labulabi,
Juanajaafar,
I love you for your objective comment. I'm always sad that many of us have not matured to be objective. Or is it our education system?
I followed Obama's campaign on the web and yes, ROI on the USD15 that I gave to his campaign is many, many times worth it. I learned a lot - the way the campaign is designed and executed, the way new media is exploited, the way the campaign team think, the way journalists and analysts cover and write about the campaign and so on.
Such brilliance, discipline and humility. The campaign raised standards in many fields and established new ways of doing things in others. Obama has created a template and guidebook for the next President.
Abel Ahing
Well, now that our useful idiot has committed to "anyone can be Prime minister" I would like for the component parties of the BN, to seize the opportunity. They have one chance when Najib is supposed to take over to publicly declare that they do not have confidence in him considering he has so many allegations stacked up on him.
forget about a minority becoming a prime minister. Will they allow even this to happen? Or out of fear and greed they will all just keep quite and accept his Premiership?
I love the following part of his speech the most, "...more than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for the people has not perished from the Earth."
Isn't that the one and main reason why Governments were formed in the first place? To give a voice to the people who are not able to do so. Call me an idealist, call me a dreamer, but I really hope that in this lifetime, I will get to witness a miracle such as this happen in Boleh-land.
Salam,
Barrack is a Jews name, came from word 'Baruch', meaning in hebrews = Blessed, even former Israel PM name is Ehud Barak.
MM yang dihormati.. Mana la nak dapat orang Islam jadi US President selagi jews control.. atuk Islam tapi cucu tak follow jadi Islam.. pelik tu...
78% Jews voters voted Obama.
boleh lawat jerusalem post untuk kepastian.

yo, I think you are missing the point, it's the kehebatan of the American people (majority white) who took a courages step forward to elect beyond racial barrier.
that I hv to salute and respect.
sini kita buat bising on a lady who has served PKNS for 33 years tapi ACTING GM pun tak boleh...
to Ketuanan Rakyat!
Will Obama change the White House into Black House?
adoi … encik Tharieq, awat hang melalut tu? kenapa nak gelisah nama orang tu asalnya Jewish? kalau nama dia Maniam Obama encik tension lagi tak? alamak … macam la nama-nama koman kat Malaysia asli sangat kat Nusantara ni ataupun dalam dunia Islam.
nama “Ishak” yang bukan main punya sedap tu encik ingat datang dari mana kalau bukan Yitzhak? a’ah, macam Yitzhak Rabin, Perdana Menteri Israel yang kena tembak mati dulu sebab dia nak cuba berdamai dengan rakyat Palestin. pelik sangat ke mak-bapak Yitzhak Rabin pun berkenan nak bagi nama anak diorang sama dengan anak Nabi Ibrahim? tup-tup Nabi Ibrahim [eh, silap eja! maksud saya “Avraham”] tu nabi kepada penganut agama Judaism jugak. jangan la frus … sharing is caring, kata orang puteh.
kita pun pening kepala jugak dengan bab komen pasal orang Islam jadi US President. mana datang ilham komen tu? tak ada pulak si Obama tu kata dia Muslim. terang-terang dia kata dia Kristian. kalau tak silap orang Kristian tak ada ibadah solat dalam tradisi mereka, jadi kenapa encik Tharieq mengharap? bab dia pakai yarmulke lawat Baitul Maqdis tu apa sangat nak dihairankan? kalau Khalid Samad lawat gereja pakai kemeja dan diiringi ketua paderi maknanya dia Kristian ke?
alamak, teringat pulak forum Nakbah hari tu ada pasangan suami-isteri pakai kafiyyeh yang ada gambo bendera Palestin. mungkin encik Tharieq akan rasa diorang tu betul-betul kurang asam kalau encik ada kat situ sebab diorang sebenarnya rakyat Lubnan, bukan raykat Palestin. Kristian pulak tu. adoi …
Salam,
Komen agak panjang sedikit, jadi untuk pemahaman i tiru chedet, komen menggunakan nombor.
1. Sabar Cik Juana Jaafar Sayang, kalau cik lagila, kalau dah kahwin sila abaikan perkataan "sayang".
2. Buat apa nak angin-angin Cik Juana.
3. I tak gelisah pun.
6. Kan kebebasan bersuara. MM pun rileks je. gua pun respect kat dia. bapak dia lagi la i respect.
7. Terang-terang dia buat Ritual Yahudi tu. Nak backing-backing la cik juana. i takde hal punya.
8. I takde masalah dengan kristian ortodok Labenon. diorang baik apa. mereka percaya monotheism iaitu satu tuhan. agama diaorang anuti pun tak tercemar macam kristian yang lain tu apa nama khatolik ka. protestant ka.
9. Mentor Obama pun Yahudi terpelihara. Apa ka nama Abner Mikva, Dia pun cakap "Barrack will be the first Jewish President in the U.S". Mentor dia cakap. bukan i.
10. Ni pemerhatian i je tau, nak cari sumber artikel takda masa. Yelah i komen je bukan buat Research macam orang buat Bachelor, Master tu.
Mana-mana presiden US pun sama je. semua proksi Zion. Sebelum ni spekulator wang yang tempangkan negara pd tahun 1997. baru-baru ni spekulator minyak yang naikkan harga minyak. Diorang ni dah kaya godooh dah. rakyat ni ikan bilis je. Yang bangkrapkan bank kat amerika geng-geng zion ni. pinjam duit banyak-banyak sampai bank dah takde duit. yang tarik keluar deposit pun geng-geng zion. amerika pun hampir bankrap. Sekarang diumpamakan seorang rakyat amerika mempunyai hutang USD 30,000 seorang.
11. Malaysia pun mempunyai kesan kerana rakan dagangan utama USA dalam 40%. US pun dah tak berapa nak ada duit nak beli barang dari malaysia. exporter malaysia pun tak confident pasal US takda duit. LC dan BG bank US pun belum tentu ada guarantee lagi. i tak risau pun. mungkin rakyat malaysia yang risau dah biasa hidup mewah tak boleh hidup mewah lagi. nak soru pun miss. i tak kisah sangat Malaysia bumi yang kaya. kurang-kurang i boleh tanam jagung ke. ubi ke. pucuk ubi ke janji boleh isi perut. tak harap pun pada kerajaan. tuk nenek zaman jepun pun boleh hidup. sampai ajal nanti i mati jugak. bukan boleh bawak duit dalam kubur pun. rakyat malaysia yang lain-lain la nanti banyak complaint terutama yang greedy yang manjang tak cukup. tak dapat itu ini. Ni Pendapat i . i tak minta sapa-sapa sokong pun.
12. Nak tambah lagi pendapat i. pendapat i tau. i bukan ulama, YB, RPK, Chedet, Rocky Bru dan lain-lain nak suruh u all ikut dan taksub. pendapat i je. lepas ni boleh ditongsampahkan pendapat i.
13. Bila dah jadi proksi zion ni dasar ke atas middle-east dan negara2 Islam lain sama je. Janji nak tarik tentera US keluar dari Iraq. mungkin dia tarik keluar la. tapi mungkin letak kat tempat lain. Afghanistan ke. Mana boleh lepaskan Iran gitu-gitu je. Ancaman besar kepada Israel tu. Israel cita-cita besar kena kontrol Middle-east dan north africa. baru la negara Israel selamat. nak buat temple King Solomon pun takda sapa nak kacau.
Ini pendapat i je tau. i warning. jangan baca. jangan terpengaruh.
14. I nampak cik juana ni berani dan berilmu. I pun takut-takut berani je ni nak bagi pendapat. i nak calonkan u jadi Malaysia next Prime Minister la. boleh tak.
15. Moral of the story.
wa’alaikum salam, encik Tharieq, peace be upon you too.
wassalam.
Dearest MM,
How did this turn into a religious debate?
What a stirring orator, Mr Obama. Hats off to him, the man who has instilled hope for billions around the world.
Salaam.
Kak Marina I am sorry I have to respond to our brother tharieg Quote.
I THINK IT IS THE OTHER WAY AROUND. JAHUDI AND NASRANI DO NOT FORCE OTHERS TO CONVERT THIS PERCEPTION IS ABSOLUTELY WRONG. JUST WANT YOU ALL TO KNOW THAT IN OUR CHURCH CATHOLIC CHURCH THAT IS WE DID PRAY FOR THE MUSLIM PEOPLE AND DO NOT CALL DEATH UPON THEM AND I AM NOT KIDDING, BECAUSE WE ARE CALLED TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER AND THE MUSLIM PEOPLE ARE NO EXCEPTION. AND IT IS SO SAD SOME THINKING OTHERWISE.
I agree with some of your point juanajaafar. And to me we should look beyond our religious belief.
Salam,
1. Dengan izin Datuk MM,
2. Alhamdulillah, Saya pun tak jangka dapat response pula pendapat I.
4. To Juanajafar.. I memang secara terbuka menerima pendapat u...
Yelah nak buat perkara jahat takkan nak dokumentasikan. Ini berdasarkan pemerhatian I bahawa perkara yang berlaku dalam dunia amnya dan pentadbiran US khususnya pada waktu sebelum ini dan dgn keadaan semasa adalah bertepatan dengan protocol of zion. I tak dapat explain disini kerana terlalu banyak kalau hendak diceritakan.
6. I make it short.
9. Again, yes i'm very sure some of maybe majority Judasim and Nasroni pray for the peace of the world including pray for Islam. God always hear and accept doa' from ummah. But doa' itself without action is nothing. People always doa to open mind of their leader, community and themselves to make a better life for the present and the future. But if the leader cannot change this current turmoil it's up for people to unite and tidy up political interest for a better life and living.
10. In Malaysia, we can compromise about our economy, can compromise in political, we can compromise of living together(it's happened during Tun era and before). But can we compromise in religious belief? I don't think so, when come into this is become to sensitive and taboo. How many Indian Muslim got privilages here, Indon sinonim with Islam here. Too much right. Thats why in my earlier comment said it's not the skin color, it's religious dissimilarity. Muslim got enough of this since the 'Perang Salib' until now. If we keep openly given a privilages to non-muslim at the end muslim got nothing.
11. In Practism, Aqidah, Tauhid and Fikah, Islam should be much-much strong religion. But with the poltical interest + democracy + human law nowaday become a barrier for muslim to maintain their strength towards Islam. Guess who create this political system, democracy, free trade, monetary system, financial system and whatever allies with this came from zion. The past and current situation and system are align with the 'Protocol of Zion' existance more than century ago.
We can see know is the time the collapsed of monetary system and financial system, Paperless and doubtful. Except Islamic banking that practice akad, visibility, no interest (profit with no flip-flop margin), without 'gharar' activities (doubtful), no speculation, no option for future trading, and easy for us to practice business activities.
12. I'm fully support if the reliability of Indian or Chinese or whatever to Become Malaysian PM if he/she muslim.
13. But for now in religious matters i'm thrust in ulama and tok guru (continuity of Prophet Muhammad and Khalifah). Forgive me because i'm still doubt to agree with the liberalisme people even support with verse from Al-Quran and Hadith because it's the people thinking without guru and guidance. Please prove me wrong juanes if u got guru.
But don't worry i still can accept thoughts of liberalisme people.
14. For 777, maybe u said i condemn totally to jews and nasrani. For overall i still got doubt with the jews and nasrani but agree with some thought especially science, technology and education, but i'm totally doubt and against zionisme.
15. My comments do not have any political interest.
16. I know many people against me about my comments. I'm pleased.
P/S : Sorry Datuk asalnya nak make it short, tapi dan terlebeh suda.
Saudara Tharieq, no I am not condemning you. I appreciate your response and I respect and understand your doubt because I also have doubt with Hamas, Hezbolah for example. But I really do hope real peace will come to the middle east. It breaks my heart to be honest to see innocent people in Palestine and Israel got trap in the middle. Without conversion of heart (I am not talking about religion here) there will be no peace. PEACE
I too have hope and i too am impressed by Baracks Barakah and hope it all goes well.. but i cant help feeling cynical because bottomline the US president is the personification of the foreign policy..i know its an anti climax to be sceptical of Barak now, but only time can tell if things will really change.
