Thoughts While Waiting for UMNO Election Results

Hi folks, in case you're wondering, no, I'm not at PWTC in my best red and white baju. That's mostly because I am NOT a member of UMNO.Hard to believe I know but nobody's ever asked me to join so I've been saved from ever having to say no.

But like everyone else, member or not, I'm watching it closely. Unfortunately I can't say I have any insider information. Despite being banned from the General Assembly, the Malaysian Insider and Malaysiakini seem to have the lowdown on what's going on so best to look in on their websites. Also at The Nut Graph. Why these online media plus a few others were banned from the proceedings I don't know, especially when the DPM mentioned in his speech that UMNO really needs to embrace the cybermedia because that's the way the world is now. Like, duh...

The results of the Wanita, Youth and Puteri elections will be in around 9pm tonight they said. Our so-last-century current Wanita head repeated again that Wanita should not be vocal nor advocate for women's rights. On that score alone, I hope she loses. Quiet women never got anything or anywhere.

I'm not going to analyse Najib's speech last night. I thought he made some good points, principally about changing the quota system for the UMNO elections and doing away with giving the power to vote to only the branch delegates. Also I'm glad he unequivocally stated we need to regain our fluency in English, without sacrificing Bahasa Malaysia, in order to be able to compete in the world today.

It was just his style that was odd. For one thing, it seemed forced to me. For another, it reminded me --especially in the rolling rrrrrrssss_ of someone else from The Other Side. All those rather too practised gestures and the odd wiping of the mouth. What was all that? I know that in UMNO GA, everyone puts great store in oratory skills but the best ones are always the ones who are natural. For that, even though I think he was a total lout in Parliament and am so glad he lost last March 8, few people equalled Badruddin Amiruddin. The guy can sure talk! But I guess he's a prime example of oratory ability not equalling brain capacity. So I should not complain so much about people who aren't great speakers.

Anyway...I shall wait with bated breath for the results tonight. Not that I'm overly optimistic about much at the moment. However I would like to have the answer to the question that has always bothered me: how do politicians consistently say and act in public in ways which they would never do in private? Meaning, how is it that people who are naturally very open and liberal in private can sound so conservative in public?

Me, I'm just glad I'm not one.

By the way, apparently Dad has decided to attend the opening of the GA tomorrow. That will be interesting. (He hasn't been for the last three assemblies. In 2007, I accompanied my Mum to the opening because Dad had just got out of hospital after his operations at IJN.)

At the time of writing seems like your bro ain't gonna make it.

Sadly UMNO has not learnt anything from 803. Same old rhetoric and nothing new really. At the same time water cannoning and tear gassing the other side. Doesn't bode well for what is to come. Problem is once these things are normalised, we become used to it and before you know it we're all done in for good!

Let's hope it's not another case of "bad breath" rather than speeches.

I don't know if it's me. But every time Rosemajib is on the box giving a speech, he sounds like he's trying to emulate Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

"Four score dan sepuluh tahun ago..." Sorry lah, tambah a little for our M'sian champor style.

But honestly, I think he's straining too hard to sell us something with rhetoric everytime instead of relaxing and speaking sincerely off the cuff.

Who writes his speech? Good God no, not the DESTINED ONE with the receding forehead? Could it be?

The wiping of the mouth was because forced speech produces a lot of spitum.

Yes I thought he tried too hard to be eloquent. Must have rehearsed it a few times.

Considering the Malay audience and how they love the painfully contrived style of sajak and puisi reading, it would have gone down very well with them.

I was just remarking to my husband that of the 6 Malaysian PMs, Najib's oratory skills will emerge as the best.

U are not a member of UMNO?? Heheh.. not a surprised, my parents are full-fledged UMNO members too and I dont think I am, though I do remember my dad handing me the form. Maybe its just Malay middle class (out of NEP of course!) find that Malay grass root plight not as appealing anymore.

Spot on! I totally agree. And that is not only applied to Najib. But almost everyone -- including the opposition leaders. Seriously, I hate people 'screaming' or 'barking' to get their points heard. As if we all are deaf!

When it comes to oratory skill -- nobody comes close to Tun M. I love his 'wittiness' and entertaining sarcasm. He is so natural and effortless. Very very convincing (and enjoyable to listen to!) -- without trying too hard.

IMM, I call my Dad Daddy but refer to him as Dad to everyone else.

Donplaypuks, who is the Destined One?

Erin, my parents never once tried to get me to enrol as a member. I have always preferred not to join because I think I would have trouble toeing the line. I much prefer the freedom of being in an NGO.

Probably you have been too busy with other commitments. But a certain lady with vested interest gave a press conference to the effect that Rosemajib's ascension was Destiny!!

In Malaysia DSAI is the best in oratory skill either in English or Malay but only 2nd to TUN M.
Anak Melayu Kedah nii still the best!!

My father is 82 years old and a strong diehard UMNO members and yet I am not even a member also.....but deep deep down inside my heart I am so damn proud of him and for all UMNO member of his time.

Donplaypuks, that must have been while I was on one of my travels. But there are so many ladies with vested interests!!

DSAI best in oratory skills???

Ahhhh....Don't think so! The last time I saw him on AL Jazeera...he was hardly answering the questions asked.

Like him or hate him, Khairy probably fares the best in front of the camera.

Problem with Malaysian politicians...and that includes the Tun, they just about do a bad job regularly especially in English. I wouldn't know about their performance in Malay though.
