JJ to DC???

JJ to be ambassador to US

KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 — A former minister is set to be appointed Malaysia’s ambassador to the United States, a move which indicates that the Najib administration is looking to upgrade its relations with the Obama administration.

The appointment, which is being vetted by the US State Department, could also raise questions about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s appetite to keep controversial individuals away from his administration.

Government sources told The Malaysian Insider that Datuk Seri Jamaludin Jarjis will enjoy the status of a minister in his new appointment.

A close friend of the PM, he was passed over for a Cabinet position because of concerns that he was carrying too much baggage.

He was accused and cleared of sexual harassment as well as criticised for comments made about Malaysian Indians while on a trip to the United States a couple of years ago. But all along there has been speculation that the MP for Rompin and former Science, Technology and Innovation Minister would be rewarded with a senior position in a government-linked company or as a special envoy of the government.

The reason being put forward for his nomination to be ambassador is that he has a "good network" in the US.

A former Second Finance Minister and Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, he is best known for the country’s Angkasawan programme, a project which brought pride to the country but also raised questions on the wisdom of spending millions of ringgit on a project with no tangible benefits to the public.

Several days ago, blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin alleged that Jamaludin tried to make a deal with him, asking the former to stop linking Najib and his wife to the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shariibuu.

RPK, as he is popularly known, alleged that he met Jamaludin at a car park at the Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur, and they drove to a roadside stall in Jalan Ipoh.

Raja Petra said that he did not make the deal. The blogger was charged with sedition for his posting “Let’s send Altantuya murderers to hell”, but he failed to turn up in court last month.

When contacted, Jamaludin said the allegation was rubbish, adding that he was seeking legal advice.

Why, why, why???

The ambassador post to Washington is a very important post and we need someone there who truly understands international relations and diplomacy and all the issues that arise between us and the US. In the past we've had career diplomats (ok, one or two political appointees too but not for a long time now) including the late Tan Sri Zain Azraai. Our last ambassador there was Datuk Rajamah Hussain but only briefly I think because the post has been vacant for a quite a while.

But now we're getting a political appointee who will get Ministerial status as well. OK, that will tell the Americans that we regard Washington as an important post. But navigating DC is something else. Apparently JJ has many contacts in the US, including among the Obama circle. But getting past Rahm Emanuel may not be that easy.

Anyway, the US State Department still has to OK this appointment. What if they say no?

JJ does not deserve to be an Ambassador. His reputation speaks for itself. What is najib trying to pull here?

I totally agree with JJ's appointment as Ambassador to the US instead of a career diplomat as we surely need someone who can "feel" his way around Washington DC.

As for sending an angkasawan into space .... it's worth every sen spend .... they have been sending monkeys & other animals into space years ago and on free rides too.

I don't understand what natives are restless means by "we surely need someone who can "feel" his way around Washington DC."

If that were even moderately true, most Western nations would have dispensd with career diplomats in favour of political appointees a long time ago.

Career diplomats do exactly that - feeling their way around the
leading capitals of the world over 10-15 years before while learning th eropes and establishing their credentials firmly.

And, if JJ was deemed to be carrying excess baggage to be made a Minister, then certainly he's not fit to go to Washington or London and tarnish the name of M'sia's Diplomatic Corps!!

Donplaypuks, I think Natives was being sarcastic. See Anak Perelih's comment to understand the context of 'feel'. :-)

Dear Marina M,

You dont have to think,in fact Natives is being sarcastic, poor Donplaypuks is being so naive.

Bro Don,MarinaM is trying not be explicit here, the word'feel' means 'raba-raba'lah.I am sure you must have heard about the case against JJ,not too long ago, where he was accused of molesting a hotel sales girl and cleared by our trustworthy judges?

So Natives, probably meant that now JJ,can direct his pent up testorone hormones towards Hillary lar bro.

Sorry MarinaM for being explicit, just for laughs.

Regards.

Uou see, simple deductions la. He is alleged to have groped a Malaysian girl. She complains.

We all tend to believe American girls welcome gropers.

So, Najib, his friend, sends him to where his friend will be happiest la!!

Even if Natives AR's meant it to be sarcastic, I'd like to take it at face value though.

1. Yes, the 'feel' is giving JJ the advantage coz of his said network there.

2. Yes, the angkasawan project is worth every sen coz the pioneers were doing the reece missions with animals before. If they were willing to spend billions (today's worth) why not us with a person (persons in the future) who can think?

Thanks you Marina and Thank you Joenathan . I couldn't have explained it any better myself. ;-)

BTW donplaypuks ... no problem ... none taken.

Some times I just don't understand. For someone with such high academic achievements and with a doctorate in power engineering, why would he allowed himself to be tainted in such a way?

Indeed, education can buy knowledge, but not wisdom.

I agree with Marina that I hope he does not embarasss us by being the rejectee of the diplomat cor. His heavy baggage will be useful for the CIAs etc. when they need to squeeze MY.

As a minister, he has nothing much but the joyride of the 'angkasawan' of a space traveller & of course flying between Khazakstan, Russian, US etc.

And looking at Najibs track record so far, it will disappoint.

We just have a masochistic desire to embarrass ourselves on the international arena, do we?

Lets hope for no bad news from DC.

yea Im very happy when JJ is going to be send to US as an ambassador. if he is still here, he might send more monkeys to ISS and waste hundreds millions tax payers money.

What if he misbehaves in DC and causes an embarrassment to us internationally?

nothing personal vs JJ. However felt this move gonna suck lots of taxpayers' $$$$. Imagine this, as a serving MP, we need to fly him back for every Parliament sitting. Being a simple man he can't fly economy! & not forgetting the fact the he does not fly alone! so in that 3-4 yrs before the next GE, this move will eat up tons of our $$$... perhaps can fund a few by-elections. So what's this nonsense that by-election is a waste of $$$.
Additionally, when he is away, who is taking of care of his rompin?

Gee, this news sucks indeed. Besides butt-pinching, JJ also made himself famous for being "Mister 30%" while a minister. Malaysia is going to further a nice reputation of Itself in DC.

ELECTIONS NOW."

Oh Yeah! JJ knows his way around the bars around Foggy Bottom (where the US State Department is located). Bottom pinching may be tolerated. He has license to pinch as much bottoms he want. But of course he has to pay to do that.

And he can park his Porche with the diplomatic plate anyway he want. The cops cannot do anything.

Hahahah!
