‘Floating mat’ a sign to people
KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu chief imam has attributed the unusual occurrences at the Crystal Mosque here as a sign of the people distancing themselves from the religion.
Ustaz Azizi Saidi Abdul Aziz described claims that a visitor had seen and photographed prayer mats floating in the mosque as “hardly phenomenal” and people should stop thinking that it was due to genies or ghosts. (so mats float a lot in Terengganu?)
Mystifying: This ‘floating mat’ phenomenon occurred at the Crystal Mosque in Kuala Terengganu. The imam says such occurrences have been reported in Saudi Arabia. “Such mystifying occurrences have been reported in Saudi Arabia,” he said yesterday. (So it must be normal...)
A woman from Negri Sembilan who visited the mosque had photographed the phenomenon with a mobile phone camera early this month, triggering fear among locals.
Azizi Saidi said the phenomenon could be linked to the lackadaisical attitude of Muslims in the state in performing congregational prayers. (thought the mosques are always full in Terengganu, unlike in the sinful valley of Klang...)
“There is nothing to panic. This is a call to Muslims not to overlook their obligation towards performing prayers together.
“There are umpteen mosques in Terengganu but there is a lack of mosque-goers.
“Some of our mosques lack people even during Friday prayers,” he added. (Why?)
He said the occurrence was not “bizarre” but should be seen as a miracle that could be considered a sign from the Al-Mighty. (I would have thought the Al-Mighty would have used something a bit more dramatic than flying mats...)

hahahaha this is too funny!!! nice way of putting it into some perspective.
Just read your other post re the maid situation and reported attitudes. I honestly believe Malaysian society is getting very de-sensitized and detached from their humanity collectively, and clearly as individuals. Totally agree with you - maids are (human) employees and should be treated no differently.
Well, with all the other serious stuff that we got to read some amount of amusement is necessary isn't it? Just chalk it down to that.
But to suggest that mosques in Terengganu are empty even on Fridays, now that is something to think about. Maybe someone will take pictures this Friday.
LOL...when i read it in the newspaper...i would have thought this would come out in KOSMO! or something like that...:P
oh the mat is not actually floating - look carefully, anybody can make the thick mat to stand like that. i dont need all this supposedly 'miraculous' things to believe in Allah. the Quran is the biggest miracle :)
Perhaps it's one of those magic tricks used in Breaking The Magician's Code (airs on AXN, Thursday, 9pm). Anyway, your perspective on this matter is quite interesting, and I too cannot believe that mats can fly.....
you would be surprised that many muslims would take this as a sign from Almighthy...
IMHO, muslims in this country has now reach a stage where they will believe in anything and everything they wanted to believe in...
kismis doa?
by the way, been to crystal mosque and i think the reason for the lack of people praying in crystal mosque is simply because every trengganu people hate the mosque so much....
i have talk to people around there and they said it's a sin to build a mosque like that in the middle of no where....
so i doubt it very much when that fella says trengganu people don't do their friday prayers, maybe they just don't do it at certain specific mosque...hehe
explains why i dont read the star anymore.
salam,
some idiots may spin further this phenomenon... wait for that to come.
"the only way to save the people of terengganu from laknat Allah is be with PAS"...
That is spooky!!
Hi Marina, i find this report a bit strange, not because of the phenomenon but the reporting of it. This phrase " prayer mats floating in the mosque as “hardly phenomenal” is weirder than the flying mats!
There have been reports throughout history about levitation amongst 'holy' sages in various religions and I still find these reports to be truly phenomenal. Unless there are numerous incidents of these flying mats in Terengganu, then I think the reporter has misreported the story. I really hope for an proper investigative journalist to probe further these remarkable(if true) events and not turn it into another urban myth.
The crop circle formations here in the UK are a yearly springtime occurence, and despite the various attempts to debunk these formations, no one has yet been succesful in disproving fully these phenomenally huge(300-400ft) circles which appear literally overnight, inspite of the interest, skills and technology at our disposal.
The flying mats may be a hoax or real. Let us not pass judgement from one news report. The truth is out there. Somewhere.
OMG!!! hahahahaha
What is the profile of those who opt to study medicine or actuarial science? Again, what is the profile (the majority anyway) of those who opt to study religious studies?
I rest my case.
Hi Marina,
This article today in The Star (http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2009/7/2/nation/4230712&sec=nation)is also worth commenting on. This 'occurrence' was referred to as a ‘positive development’ for Masjid Kristal where ‘visitors would start making a beeline to the site. . .’ Sounds very commercial to me though i would still visit the mosque and its park because it is amazing and not because of a 'floating mat'.
Hi all,
Prosperity Despite Spiritual Famine
-What awaited those who did not support true worship? Famine of the worst kind—spiritual famine! “There are days coming,” said the Sovereign Lord Jehovah, “and I will send a famine into the land, a famine, not for bread, and a thirst, not for water, but for hearing the words of Jehovah.” (Amos 8:11) Religion is in the throes of such a spiritual famine. But honesthearted ones in her midst can see the spiritual prosperity of God’s people and are flocking to Jehovah’s organization. The contrast between the situation in Christendom and that prevailing among true Christians is aptly shown in Jehovah’s words: “Look! My own servants will eat, but you yourselves will go hungry. Look! My own servants will drink, but you yourselves will go thirsty. Look! My own servants will rejoice, but you yourselves will suffer shame.”—Isaiah 65:13.
I'm not impressed .... remember "Aladdin and his Magic Carpet Ride" bedtime story ???
Is the photo taken inside the Crystal Mosque? I thought it was a shining example of Malaysian architecture and construction and something to be proud of and all? Just look at the window frame. Definitely signs of shoddy Malaysian workmanship. Or lack thereof. Maybe the mat was mad at that.
...wow! cool ! imagine a flying magic carpet ride ... and we had to send a Malaysian to space in a rocket recently ???
Datin,
I am surprised that you have chosen this 'story' to blog here. I dont think it deserves your or other space!! Many other biggers local & national need our attention!
Wassalam
Hi Nyna's Hus,
I think it's OK for MM to mention about this flying carpet thing. For one, it is descriptive of the state of affairs in this country. In a country where religion has an increasingly tight grip on how we should live, it's scary that our religious leaders think along the lines of these Trengganu spiritual leaders. SIS leaders (as well as MM herself) were told that they had no qualification to speak on religion. That when we are sick, we seek a doctor & when we need religious opinion, we ask an ulama. But when the brightest take up medicine & engineering, the rest take up whatever's left to take up & the balance of the balance take up religion, may God help us! That's why Tun M once declared that there were already too many ulama's in the country (or something to that effect).
Most of these leaders won't even understand the rantings in this blog! And it's not just the English!
Babe, are we in trouble?!
