Could This Be Our Stephen Lawrence case?

Politicians unanimous over setting up of Royal Commission

PETALING JAYA: Leaders from both sides of the political divide were united in calling for the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock.

Wanita MCA chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun wants the Government to, not only set up the commission but, release its findings to the public.

She said the police and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) should conduct a thorough investigation into Teoh’s death. He was found dead nine floors below the MACC office on Thursday.

“It is incumbent on the MACC to furnish the public with the entire details and circumstances during the time its officials were with Teoh to show that the commission has nothing to hide,” she said in a statement yesterday.

The details, Chew said, should include from the moment MACC raided his office, seized his laptop, the questioning, his release at 3.45am and till his nap on the settee at the MACC office purportedly at 6am.

MCA spokesman Gan Ping Sieu agreed, saying that the Government should set up an independent committee to investigate the case.

“MACC should take full responsibility over the matter and the police should take immediate action to investigate the case thoroughly,” he said in a statement.

MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the MACC should quickly clear the air over Teoh’s death to restore public confidence in the commission.

Noting that MCA was “very concerned” about the incident, he added: “The public has the right to know why Teoh’s interrogation had dragged on till after 3am,” Liow told reporters after meeting hawkers at the Bagan MCA division office yesterday.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said a Royal Inquiry was needed to investigate the case in an objective manner.

He said in his blog yesterday that regardless of Teoh’s political stance, the incident should be viewed as a loss of a human life.

MIC Youth said having a Royal Commission to probe the case would help to clear all doubts. Its coordinator T. Mohan said the Government should show that it had nothing to hide.

Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Pakatan Rakyat leaders called for the setting up of the commission, adding that they had registered with the MACC director their strongest protest, and condemned the manner in which investigations were carried out.

Speaking to reporters after a Pakatan leadership council meeting last night, Anwar said Pakatan urged the rakyat to pay their last respects to Teoh at 10am at his family home in Alor Gajah, Malacca, on Monday.

DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the case was an “acid test” to determine whether there was transparency and justice in Malaysia.

BN politicians can either continue to delude themselves by harping on their version of how much transparency and justice there is in Malaysia or they can make a concerted effort to correct the perception of the rakyat who constantly call for more transparent investigations. A Royal Commission with a panel of people with utmost integrity can help in this.

This case may be the watershed in Malaysian politics. It can be the final nail in BN's coffin or it can be otherwise.

Over to you, Najib!

A young life has been lost. No one can bring him back to life. There is widespread doubt that the perpetrators will be brought to justice here in this honourable land.

As much as I hope you might be right, I am afraid the cynic in me tells me otherwise. The powers that be cannot allow anything to deny them the use of these institutions of government for their own personal purposes.

In carrying out its investigations on the Assembly members of Pakatan Rakyat for alleged misuse of funds...and bearing in mind that this is the first time the "misuse" of these funds is being investigated already tarnishes any kind of misdeeds they may find.

When the MACC is unable to see the elephant in the room and yet they seem to be chasing ants any hope of credibility is lost.

Teoh is no Stephen Lawrence. And even if he is, the Malaysian Police and MACC and basically any institution that has laid itself down to first and foremost serve the interest of UMNO has lost all claim to be part of the human race. So, if you are hoping some kind of redemption from this episode, I am afraid you have a long lonely wait. Lonely, because I can't think of anyone else having the same hopes as you.

For the late Teoh Beng Hock and his family/friends, may justice prevail.

Racism comes in many forms. Systematic discrimination (because of your socio-culture/socio-economic background) is one of them. PPSMI is a “complete racist” policy against the underprivileged Sabahan and Sarawakian kids.

If there will ever be ‘a turning point’ for racism in Malaysia – let this PPSMI be the one. Because of its magnitude and the degree of the impact.

A previous RCI had the secretary of a prominent lawyer giving evidence, under oath, that the lawyer had written out a judgement for a judge to deliver in a litigation case.

So far as I know, nothing has become of this lawyer or the persons implicated.

Should we expect the same ? Hope springs eternal but for the family of Teoh beng Hock, death is final.

Marina,
The Police or MACC can walk into your house today, confiscate your lap top and drag you to the police HQ and interrogate you for 20 hours. AND YOU CAN DO NOTHING ABOUT IT, unless you are well connected.
Woe betide, if you in the opposition or a Chinese or an Indian. You are a dead duck.
You land up in the Roman arena with ravaging lions.
When one can be arrested for wearing black, what law is left to protect us.

commentators ,

please be careful with your comment.

this issue has got nothing to do with race and please stop offending each other.

they are just as sad and angry as you and many are crying their hearts out with deep condonlences to the deceased family and wife to be.

this is the time for all malaysians to be united on this one issue and not let TBH death be in vain.

The Star headlined, "Politicians unanimous over setting up of Royal Commission" seemed to be defective reporting.

Where on earth do you see any UMNO greats (except KJ) said there is a need to setting up a RCI for the late Teoh Beng Hock?

It is reckless reporting by the Star. Unless, so said by any other UMNO stalwart and the divisional warlords over the country. UMNO remain silent except forced to say so, like Muhyiddin (of course changing course from his previous objection to saying yes now).

UMNO cares for nothing except if it affects its chances of continued ruling over the rakyat.

Marina, it could be, for in history an incident like this has a way in delivering the truth for mankind.

Condolence to Teoh's loved one and may he rest in peace.

Speedy inquiry
On the same boat routines
The front door and back door
Swing through our lives

It doesn't going to help
The Gestapo techniques
The long time torturing techniques
Of physical abuses and mental tortures
Let the penetrators face the law

We are humans
With fear of the unknown
With fear of what others may do
In uniform they forget
Mobsters in our midst

Speedy inquiry
1Malaysia has no place
The debris hit hard on the ground
What else is new?

We pay them to help us and nation
We come out in body bags shameful uniform
What else is new?
1Malaysia barbeque

The honest officers
Wake up clean up the mess
The nation doesn't need it
The shame, the shame and the shame!

Everyone knows that Utusan & B/Harian are independent & do not represent the views of Najib & the ruling party. Since their views on the TBH matter is turned into a they-and-us issue, I'm sure our fair-minded, ever-popular, prime minister will give them a public rebuke.

Man, my heart is bursting with hope!
