It's been a long time since I reviewed anything, whether a book or a movie. But having watched The Debate tonight, I was rather moved to write one. Now this is not going to be a review about substance, because I'm not sure I really understood what little substance there was. This is really going to be a review of the debaters, rather than the debate.
First of all, in many ways they were well matched, Anwar and Shabery. They're both guys, one smooth-skinned and one who used to be smooth-skinned. (OKlah, Anwar's been having some troubles lately so very understandable that he looked a bit worse for wear.) They're of the same height and both have that air of the natty dresser, even if someone must have decided that ties are not de rigeur tonight, perhaps to make it seem more casual.
I thought Anwar started off shakily but soon warmed up. While Shabery started off smooth and then got shaky. Both had facts to throw at the other but you could see who was the more experienced politician and who knows how to appeal to people. After a while, Shabery started to look, well, shifty. I wound up being more fascinated by the body language of these two rather than actually listening to what they said.
Not that there was much to what they said. I didn't find either very convincing. But people are often convinced by demeanour, by what looks like sincerity and conviction. They look at what expressions you pull your face into and whether they are deliberate or not. Both debaters smile and neither smile is the sort that warms the cockles of your heart. But Shabery's bottom lip has an unnerving wobbliness that betrays....what, nervousness?
The audience naturally comprised supporters of both sides but they were very subdued, compared to the usual raucousness you'd expect from devotees. They clapped when their respective heroes made a point they liked (though each time they sounded as if they were cue'd). The curious thing was that Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah seemed disinclined to applaud her husband at all. (I wish I knew which one was Shabery's wife. All the women in the audience seemed to be Anwar fans except maybe Halimah Sadique.)
I rather liked the format of the debate though where each had a chance to say their bit, then answered questions put to them by the moderator Datuk Johan Jaafar, then handpicked questioners from both sides. Then they got to ask each other questions! But I suppose it's in the nature of politicians to be unable to ask a question without preceding it with a speech, nor to answer anything directly or to stick to the point. But by wandering into the realm of the personal, I think Shabery lost major points.
Anyway, all in all I think these debates are a good thing. Let's have more match-ups. How about Nik Aziz against Zahid Hamidi? Yen Yen against Shahrizat? Azalina against Rafidah? Nazri against Guan Eng? Harussani against Asri? Yummy, makes for great TV!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteAzalina vs Rafidah? Now that one I want to see... hahahaha
How about Tun and Pak Lah? That would be solid gold!
ReplyDeleteSyed
I think its the first and the last debate you are going to see.
ReplyDeleteThe greatest damage done by Anwar today was not shattering Shabery. He came out alright, though jouvenile at times. And that can easily be pardoned. The damage done was to all the demonising of Anwar and Pakatan Rakyat orchestrated by UMNO the last several months.
After all Pakatan are supposed to be rabble rousers and bankrupt politicians who can only be disruptive. Teh debate did not show Anwar or Pakatan to be that.
The visuals sent a message that would certainly cause doubts in the minds of the UMNO heartland of what ever UMNO has been telling in demonising Anwar and Pakatan. On the PR side of things UMNO lost out and certainly Pakatan gained.
Well, if I am right in my assumptions, then tomrrow MSM is not going to give the debate much of a coverage. Or they may give it diminished coverage that is not reflective of its real import. In any case, I think this might also be the last.
Shabery should not have touched on politics and history. He doesnt have facts and figures but only trying to make Anwar look bad by attacking his personality. Anyhow, thumbs up for Shabery to even dare to debate with Anwar. Overall Anwar (*****), Shabery (**)
ReplyDeleteHi Marina,
ReplyDeleteNice article :) and really appreciate your effort for social service. Very disappointed to Datuk Shabery, he had been made personal attack more than debating on how government can help poor people in Malaysia.

That would be one between a LEADER and a LEAD!
May not be "solid gold" lah.
But knowing what a dead weight lead is, it'd definitely be very heavy indeed... on the leader.
I lick my greedy lips at the yumminess of Marina's suggestions.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Tun vs Pak Lah.
ReplyDeleteAnwar seemed to be unprepared for the question to the opposition and took a long time to form one allowing Ahmad Shabery to take a shot at him. Beside that Anwar seemed to score better.
ReplyDeleteYou are right we should have more of such debates. On this score kudos to Ahmad Shabery for making this a reality. TV9 scored the highest rating last night.
YEAH! Great idea to have more of these moderated/modulated debates between antagonists and protagonists. The public gets to see a more sustained, albeit not always satisfactory discourse on a particular issue or topic.
ReplyDeleteBoth sides tried to slip in their 2sen worth of personal attacks - with Shabery losing out for trying too hard.
Anwar prepared his figures and calculations well and if they're economically correct, I'm also wondering why the RM 5 billion in fuel hike (@50sen per litre) is so difficult to raise/cover. But then I'm no economist or former Finance Minister!
Re the lips - yes I notice Shabery's quivering lower lip which is perfectly OK if he has a stiff upper lip!
Anwar's eyebrows twitched up and down quite a bit too with his right brow slowly rising to high heaven!
I felt sad Marina that true Malay genius is being wasted by too much political nonsense!
Sis
ReplyDeleteI don't blame you but it is Johan Jaaffar dear. The Minister was floored due to his flawed analysis methinks.
aMiR
The only serious challenger to Anwar in such as debate is Tun M.
ReplyDeleteAhmad Rubbery is rubbery in his frothing mouth trying of all things...personal attack. Where did Pak Bodoh get the idea that Rubbery has good oratry skill. He seemed lost at one point trying to fend off Anwar's argument. A mouthwash would be good for Rubbery for his foul smelling mouth.
Asri vs Harussani... that i definitely wait
ReplyDeleteThe VC of University Utara Malaysia made an idiot of himself. How come he did not know the links between IPP and oil? Is this a joke or what?
ReplyDeleteCome to think of it, this Kadi fellow was so carried away to whack Anwar that he forgot the question he was suppose to ask.
Nazri against Guan Eng. Khairy against Kit Siang. Nik Aziz against Abdullah.
ReplyDeletehahahha.. that would be interesting
Why not Bung Mokhtar against Gobind Singh Deo .. hehehe .... or Yen Yen against Teresa Kok?
Hehehehe ....
Najib vs Anwar. Altantuya case vs Sodomy case.
ReplyDeleteAs'kum n Selamat Pagi
ReplyDeleteakak,
Saya mmg penyokong kuat BN Terutama sekali Zaman2 kegemilangan TUN dahulu. Tetapi selepas sahaja TUN melepaskan jawatan semuanya berubah hanya sekelip mata.
Tun vs Anwar. It's my choice. Pak Lah cannot compete with Anwar.
ReplyDeleteHands down Anwar...he was more to the point and didn't have much time to prepare. You can see his calibre. (I am no Anwar supporter mind you and neither of BN too)
ReplyDeleteSad they had to get Shab to go against a man who knows his stuff and numbers. Shab...was a kid! AAB should have been more careful whom he sent up to be on par (least) with AI.
Anyways..i feel its the last of its debate la. Not much coverage but good.
Tun M vs Pak Lah debate? What debate would that be? Tun M will speak and Pak Lah will be taking notes on his little notepad! That's what happened the last time and Pak Lah said he will reply but never did!
ReplyDeleteTo male,
ReplyDeleteWhat you mean Pak Lah will be taking notes? He'd be a sleep long before TDM is done with his opening speech!
zzzzzz...

ReplyDeleteNormally, I wouldn't be bothered about two politicians wanting to debate and talking crap about each other but somehow last night I turned on the TV and saw the debate.
My summary was that Anwar out-debated Shabery because he resisted the temptation to make political rhetoric and had more facts. Shabery ended being a typical politician by making personal attacks and political rhetoric. He started fine but his fact driven argument started to crumble bit by bit and he finally had to resort to the politicians' staple diet - crap.
At the end of the day, both of them got it wrong. The main issue they were talking about centred around our oil, our "khazanah", our treasure and how we should use it to continue surviving. Guess what, they both missed the point. Our actual treasure shouldn't be oil or money or things, it should be our brains. Our mental capacity to survive.
Oil is finite, it can run out, it can and is being manipulated. We should do something about our brains, train our people to think so that nomatter what happens, we know how to fix things and we can come up with ideas of how to make our economy strong so that we don't have to rely on the family jewels to survive.
These people remind me of a family where the parents are dead and they left some property to the children. The children are fighting how to manage the property in order to survive. They don't realise that the property can run out one day. They never think of using their brains which can produce ideas (which are the real treasure) indefinitely.
We need leaders with brains and we need our young people to be trained to think, not memorize things so that when they grow up, they can take over this country and run it properly.
It was such a waste of time last night. I wished I was on stage to "tarok" both of them up and the rest of the political family.
MM
ReplyDeleteI think you shall take a neutral stand rather than commenting on the debate between Anwar and Shabery due to your sensitive situation as Tun M daughter. The duel between your dad n Anwar.
I watched the debate yesterday. Well matched, you said? Are you sure? I'm not Anwar supporter. I used to participate in debate contest in the highschool. Yesterday, Anwar simply win hands down.
I asked my colleaque this morning. He is UMNO die hard supporter. Even he have to admit that Shabery is so embarassing. Badawi simply send this poor fella Shabery to the lion den to be eaten bulat bulat.
Tun vs Pak Lah?I believe if Pak Lah just stand in front of Tun,he will collapse and die just by the sheer 6 bilion dollar worth smile of Tun.Anwar can't even sit in the same league with Tun.The aura of TDM will outshine him till end the world.Ooops!Sorry!! for exaggerating
ReplyDeleteDespite the alleged last minute changes in terms of tv channel and duration, I think it's fantastic that the Malaysian Government has allowed such a debate to go on air live..
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't have happened ten or twenty years ago..
I'm more interested to watch a 3-cornered fight between Tun Mahathir, DS Anwar and DS Abdullah.. OK OK I guess DS Abdullah can be allowed to debate as a team with DS Najib since he might not be much of an orator as compared to DS Anwar and Tun Mahathir.
A 3-cornered fight would certainly be more complex.. especially because all 3 camps have plenty to say about each other.. It might even last for days.. Awesome..
I guess wisdom and experience won last night. Sabery needs to learn and polish up more on body language. I wish there will be more debates such as last night. It reflects a civil society and the rakyat is wise enough to choose. I would love to see KJ vs Nurul Izzah.
ReplyDeleteI'm very disppointed with ahmad shabery for his unability in answering most of the questions posted to him.most unprofessionally, he made personal attacks to anwar ibrahim many times by citing the history most people knew. Answer was not supported by facts & figures, not that very convincing!
ReplyDeleteThe debate was a good platform to see what both politicians have to say. It's good that Pak Lah actually allowed this debate to be aired at national tv.
ReplyDeleteThis shows that Pak Lah is allowing us, Malaysians to grow and mature both politically and individually.
I just can't resist myself to comment on your review on this particular point:
ReplyDelete"First of all, in many ways they were well matched, Anwar and Shabery. They're both guys, one smooth-skinned and one who used to be smooth-skinned. (OKlah, Anwar's been having some troubles lately so very understandable that he looked a bit worse for wear.)"
Having some troubles lately? Only lately? I thought his worse troubles started, what, in 1997? I thought I could still see scars of his blackeye and the effects of his bad back?
ANWAR IBRAHIM VS SHABERY CHEEK
Anwar ambil mudah sahaja.
Thanks to Pak Lah for allowing the debate on air. This giving a good platform to allow nation know more about the policy it's going to pour on RAKYAT & what benefit RAKYAT. Example the issue "Petrol hike price"
ReplyDeleteHowever BN rep Ahmad Shaberry didn't really take this opportunity to spread on the facts which carried the message from Pak Lah's administration to RAKYAT, Unfortunately it's even shown the weakness of BN govt by only using the history & personal attacks on Answar.
The impact is Answar taking the "LOOP HOLE" greatly by giving the figures & facts through out the debate. All the points & facts which bring out by Answar is totally hit the policy running by the govt now. As remember even the wakil Answar asking where's the Perjimatan 13bil will go after the failure of 2006 increase RM0.30 petrol hike price on investing the public transportation, Ahmad Shaberry not even answer the relevant question at all?
One more interesting point out by Answar is "DAYA SAINGAN M'SIA DENGAN LUAR". He's asking we compare apple to apple where once upon a time, S'pore, Taiwan & Thailand which are same level as M'sia, What about now?
At last Answar also emphasize the Capital Income. Ahmad Shaberry go & compare M'sia to Norway, Sweden etc but Did he know the capital income is 10 times more than M'sian?
A personal comment here, i have been in S'pore more than a month. I observed S'porean paying SGD2.10 for petrol per liter. Our M'sian is RM2.70 per liter. What you think if the S'porean is earning SGD2K & a M'sian earning RM2K? Who going to face the inflation of life more? (Remember S'pore is NET importer of petroleum)

ReplyDeleteMalaysian Politicians Historic First Debate: Let's Be Fair to Both
Link:

Bro,
ReplyDeleteWhat if you are debating Anwar instead of Shabery?
Our take @ http://www.suaradu.com
Sad day for the Government. The Information Minister Wasted a most valuable opportunity to explain to the people the Government's position!!
ReplyDeleteHe should have taken the position that Anwar took, i.e "to hell with the opponent, I'm here to explain to the people our position".
The Information Minsiter not only failed his portfolio but also managed to allow Anwar Ibrahim to recruit more supporters using the government's media machinery. Heh heh.
Next time don't send a boy to do a man's job.
Anwar won by a clear mile! Next target should be Nazri:
ReplyDeleteMinister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Abd Aziz said it was up to the audience to rate the debate.
"Who is Anwar? I have no problem," he said when met at the Parliament lobby on Wednesday.
Since Nazri was prepared for a debate with Anwar, i would prefer to see Anwar vs Nazri Debate.
focus on the issues of the debate not the speakers.
ReplyDeletethat's not the objective of the debate.
I agree.. let's have more debates... more politicians vs politicians..bloggers vs bloggers so that we can see..
ReplyDeleteHow about Marina Mahathir vs Jeff Ooi?
I gave Shabery credit... at first.
ReplyDeleteHe looked like he was well briefed and held it together agaisnt a very odds-on favourite (for a debate).
It all fell apart for him when he had only 1 real point to drive home... got lost when Anwar diffused that point... started disgustingly foaming from the sides of his mouth & did the one worse thing... licking the foam!!!
Resorted to personal attacks & digging history...
It was a trashing in the end.
Only bigger thrashing would be the Tun vs AAB... but lets not even waste our dear Tun's time... hehehehe
for me, the winner is Anwar. so when, Shabery will resign? Shabery if u read tis, please walk the talk.. U r the loser..
ReplyDeleteWow, Kak Marina :) The way you pointed out the body language part macam a true nlper ;)
ReplyDeleteI missed the debate as I was on the way home from kuantan after conducting a 2 day training. :(
But I managed to catch the last bit and as was expected, Anwar did well and Shabery well, kasihan dia...
I wish I am able to watch the whole debate again & analyse the body language. The body language portrayed is far greater than the verbal that we utter. Like I always tell my trainees, we can lie with our tongues but not with our body. That's why nanti kat Padang Mahsyar mulut akan dikunci dan yang berbicara hanyalah anggota badan (surah Yaasin).
Which reminds me, hari tu, masa I tengok one of our top shots on tv clarifying on the altantuya's case, his body language totally contrasted with his denial...he he...
Ntahlah, dunia ni...
Shabery fella lost big time when he started his attacked on Anwar. That is so wrong... Especially, when the other party didnt even so much as say anything bad about him. Number 2, Shabery did not answer the question thrown to him. He was just skating around like some fairy.. That is so weak.
ReplyDeleteTun versus Badawi?? Oh please!! Give Tun a break... If you people have seen how Badawi talks and think, Tun will most probably fall asleep waiting for Badawi to finish thinking... and by the time Badawi finished talking, Tun would have turned 84 years old!!!
I think more people want to see that kind of debate again, not just in politics, but other areas as well.
ReplyDeleteThis urge probably because Malaysian is more mature and thirst for more knowledge and the running of the country.
But, we can't say the same with this MB Rustam Ali though, which repeatedly said the debate is useless and brings no benefit. *sigh*
If he don't have the balls, why stopping other people who want to debate, and the people who want to hear the debate? Probably he thinks he is a Malacca Sultan?
By the way, what's awful about the debate is only 2 things;
1) The two panelists who thought they're the debaters, and doesn't seem to know how to ask questions!
2) Anwar jacket! What's up with that?
SHABERY - you've got the "berries". The other two boys at the top, don't seem to be having those organs.
ReplyDeleteAnyway..brains are developed thru debate..not a waste of time at all.
[continued from, err, somewhere up there]
ReplyDeleteOn a more serious note.. if it's a damn focussed economic debate on the fuel price that's more important to us, then I think it would be great to also have follow-up debates. This time the debaters should be economists from different schools of thoughts in malaysia (and not just the ruling-party-endorsed social scientists lah).
[End of serious note]
Anwar the clear winner in debate with Ahmad Shabery
ReplyDeleteYes, have more of this type of TV program vs live Parliament circus!
Assalamualaikum...
ReplyDeleteI just dont understand y was everyone congratulating Shabery. He was clearly unprepared and the arguments poorly executed. He did not answer to any of the questions given and his assistant, Dr Nordin or something, did not even know wat IPP is, hence the stupid question by him.
And lastly, do u think Shabery would refuse to debate if PM and DPM demanded him to take part in the debate? No one dared to face DSAI and Shabery was the black sheep.
Dear Marina, I have been following your writings for a while now and I sincerely believe that you are a smart person with exceptional ideas. However, you aways fall short on any subject that has any relevance to Anwar Ibrahim. I urge all of us to be objective in our analysis, to call a spade when it is really a spade. The debate was not even close in favour of Shabbery, yet you say it was well matched? I sensed that you still hold some grudge against Anwar for whatever that has happened in the past between Anwar and TDM. Let that baggage go, and move ahead and mould your own opinion and stand as an independent person who can look at things witout bias. I urge you to be bold and be honest. We will respect you for that.
ReplyDeleteDear Aristotle, I guess everyone reads what they want into anything. If you read it carefully, I think I was talking about how well-matched the two debaters were in the way they looked. And if you read further down the post, I think it is pretty clear who I thought won the debate. Or am I just too subtle for my own good? :-)
ReplyDeleteDear Marina, this sort of debate would have been impossible during your dad's time. So, why don't you just say so? Credit must be given to Pak Lah, however grudgingly.
ReplyDelete"....I am not sure I really understood...." "Not that there was much to what they said." I find this condescending and patronising. Really, are you that daft? They spoke excellent Malay and spoke clearly. What's so difficult to understand? It would appear that the fuel hike does not concern you at all, does it because from the sound of this article, you just could not be bothered?
I have been a huge admirer of your writings, but really, sometimes you are so blind to your partiality, I suggest that you do make pause and do some self-examination.
You are losing credibility, as far as I am concerned.
As nuch as I adore the writings by MM, I really think her post this time around was clouded by her hatred towards DSAI. It was quite clear and I think everyone noticed that. You can't blame her, can you?
ReplyDeleteBut then again, she's entitled to her own opinion, which is good since not many would say things like what you mentioned. Congratulations, I mean it.
It seems that everyone I talked to, BN or PR supporters, almost all think that Anwars won it convincingly.
anwar hasn't been updating his wardrobe...
ReplyDeletethe coat- yuck!
well, maybe we must congratulate MR Badawi for allowing it....
ReplyDeleteWhen yr Dad was the PM.... well, i rest my case la he he he, hey, nothing personal... just the fact... btw, Malaysians were ready for such public debates 15 odd years ago, the ruling BN, never allowed it...
maybe, yr brother could spearhead it, call for open public debates in UMNO, then we could "flash out" donkeys and allow the true peoples politicians to manage the country:)
Macam mana wahai Cik Marina
Err, guys..
ReplyDeleteI do NOT think DP Marina here was even hinting at any "personal hatred" towards DS Anwar. I know she loves Tun Mahathir (it's called a father-daughter relationship) but it doesn't necessarily mean that she also hates all her dad's political enemies. I think she has her own opinion on certain issues that even her dad couldn't or wouldn't want to understand.
Ya… your dad would not have allowed such open and live debate during his time, however I personally think that pak lah would not allow it either if not because of the March 8 debacle......
ReplyDeleteAiyoo.. now is not about DSAI and Shabery anymore.. it is about whether MarinaM hates DSAI or not or that MarinaM is a brainless dumbwitted girl who likes what her dad likes?
ReplyDeleteCome on la...
I have also made a review on the debate. Some bloggers give some interesting comments in my blog. Feel free to visit my blog.
ReplyDeleteDuring the debate, Anwar pleaded many times to "let us lessen the burden on the rakyat". He also stressed that, prices had increased across the board, since the Government raised petroleum prices" On the other hand Shabery not even once addressed the issue of the burden of the people arising from high oil and food prices. Nor did he explain what the government had done and is doing to address the matter. Thus, he gave the impression that the government DID NOT care about the poor Rakyat!!!.
ReplyDeleteThen he went on, not once but twice, to challenge Anwar to name a country that had low oil prices and low inflation rates. He cited Venezuela and Iran as his cases. Both countries, according to him, had 30% to 40% annual inflation rates. He claimed he had just returned from Venezuela - suggesting that his data is both current and accurate!!
In arguing such, he was suggesting that the Government of Malaysia raised oil prices as a means to fight inflation or to keep our inflation rate down. To argue as he did is totally absurd. Higher oil prices will definitely bring about higher inflation rates. Even Form 5 students know this!!!
This created the impression that Shabery is 'buta ekonomi'. The sad thing is, in Abdullah's cabinet, Shabery may not be alone!!!
I'd to see Azalina against Rafidah and Nazri against Guan Eng. I'm sure most of us will stay at home and glue to the TV.
ReplyDeleteMarinaM said: Dear Aristotle, I guess everyone reads what they want into anything. If you read it carefully, I think I was talking about how well-matched the two debaters were in the way they looked.
ReplyDeleteMy dear Marina, this is a debate, not a fashion show on a catwalk. We judge based on the quality of the ideas and arguments on the podium.
Dear Marina,
ReplyDeleteThere was a lot of truth in what Aristotle said. We tend to have difficulty in forgiving those that we dislike for one reason or another. However, if you truly love this country and you can see where it is heading you would give all the support you can to those who are striving to push for change. We know Anwar's shortcomings but I can only see him as an instrument for change. With change there will be a new PM and totally new group. I would rather have a half rotten apple than a totally rotten one.
Dear marina,
ReplyDeletedon't be like father like daughter when u posted your comment.Be sincere with your self eventhough u hate DSIA as your father.Don't let people cursing u like what Malaysian cursing your father with the current Malaysia politic.
i hate `him`...
ReplyDeletetooooo weak explanation....
i like 2 hear `he` was talking with LOGIC IDEAS.....
syabas !!!
not suitable oppose!!!
ReplyDeleteitz really shows how weak is gov in present....
n more people will support `him`...
tq
i think one can leave the idea of azalina vs rafidah. the former is on of much lower intellect and skills to even think of debating with rafidah. even if u put muhyidin yassin with rafidah, rafidah will still have an upper hand due to her knowledge, her guts and her exposure to global environments. still can't comprehend how Pak Lah makes decision on his cabinet line-up.. just looking for weaklings like himself to run the country.
ReplyDeleteNobody in Cabinet and I mean nobody can match Rafidah Aziz. Unfortunate that she has been left out.
ReplyDeleteShe's the only one that can Match Condoleeza Rice....
Rais Yatim? Heh heh....What's he doing there?....Go back to your books. The world political stage is no place for bookworms....
